Exciting news has unexpectedly arrived today, with Sony Interactive Entertainment officially unveiling the new PlayStation 5 console model launching later this year. This new model maintains the cutting-edge technology and features of the earliest PS5 model while boasting a smaller design.
Over the years, speculations of a new and slimmer PS5 iteration have swirled across the internet. Eventually, the rumor became even more intense as court documents from the FTC trial concerning Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard indicated that a PlayStation 5 Slim is expected to be released later this year. The information stated in official court documents, ultimately lends credibility to the rumors, fueling excitement among fans.
Now, Sony has finally put an end to the rumor mill as it officially announced the release of PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in the latest PlayStation Blog post. Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition is attachable with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, providing users an option to use physical game copies. Notably, both models feature 1TB SSD, offering more internal storage capacity.
The recommended retail price for the new PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive is 499.99 USD, while PS5 Digital Edition is available for 449.99 USD.
The new PS5 model will be available starting this November in the U.S. at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com and will continue to roll out globally in the following months. In Japan, a specific release date of November 10 has been scheduled, but it remains unknown if this will be the same launch date in the U.S.
