Sonic Superstars’ latest free update is adding a festive alternate outfit in time for the holidays. 2023 has been an eventful year for Sonic the Hedgehog fans, as demonstrated by the numerous new games and media released over the past several months. One such title was Sonic Superstars, a side-scrolling throwback to the Blue Blur’s Genesis-era platforming heyday that featured five fully playable characters racing along colorful courses in the traditional single-player, co-op, and even competitive multiplayer.
While Sonic Superstars has yet to see a DLC expansion as extensive as Sonic Frontiers’ Final Horizon update, Sonic Team has offered players plenty of fun alternate looks for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy following the game’s launch in October. Fans who pre-ordered Sonic Superstars were treated to special LEGO character skins for Sonic and his nemesis Dr. Eggman, as well as a prototype rabbit version of Sonic based on Sega’s original ideas for its 90s platforming mascot. LEGO skins for Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were added later on, in addition to Amy’s modern red outfit from the Sonic Adventure titles and beyond.
Sonic Superstars Hides a 32-Year-Old Easter Egg in Plain Sight
Sonic Superstars includes a very cool Easter egg dangled right in front of players’ faces that longtime Sonic fans might be able to notice.
Now Sega is looking to blast into the holiday season with a cheerful new Sonic Superstars DLC skin, as announced in a recent press statement. This news was also posted on the official Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter account, which shared an image of Sonic’s festive, Santa Claus-inspired hat and jacket. This new Sonic Superstars outfit is available to all players for free as of this writing, and once it has been downloaded it can be equipped for use in Story Mode in the Character Selection screen by pressing the right or left directional buttons after choosing Sonic.
While it was met with decent reviews from critics, Sonic Superstars fell short of Sega’s sales expectations this fall, partially due to the decision to release it around the same time as other big hits like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Sega still hopes that sales for Sonic Superstars will pick up during the holiday months, as evidenced by the game being offered at a discount during Black Friday and rumors of a DLC expansion coming next year.
In the meantime, Sonic Superstars is continuing the Sonic franchise’s tradition of adding an alternate yuletide look for the titular blue hedgehog, just like Sonic Frontiers did with its own free seasonal DLC last year. The Sonic Holiday Costume DLC is available to download and equip right now, allowing players to spread the spirit of the holidays to the Northstar Islands while putting the brakes on Eggman’s latest Grinch-like scheme to take over the world in Sonic Superstars.
