Alexander Steen Olsen wins the first World Cup race of the alpine skiing season. The Norwegian took the giant slalom in Sölden ahead of his compatriots Henrik Kristoffersen and Atel Leigh McGrath.

Steen Olsen, 23, was 65 and 66 percentage points faster than his teammates in his second World Cup victory. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, a Brazilian newcomer who was also a Norwegian before temporarily retiring a year ago, started in No. 41 and made a brilliant comeback to finish fourth, while the 35-year-old New Dutchman Marcel Hirscher finished fourth. It has been 5,051 days since his last World Cup finish in 23rd place.

Switzerland's winning streak snapped

The best Swiss performer in a competition featuring well-known returnees was Gino Caviezel in ninth place. Thomas Tumler dropped from 4th to 14th in the afternoon. In front of a record crowd of 17,200 in Sölden, Marco Odermatt was eliminated after clearly having the best sectional result, while Loïc Meil lard) had to give up the game at short notice due to back problems. Odermatt won 11 times and Maillard two as Switzerland's nearly two-year winning streak in giant slalom was snapped.

Pinheiro Braathen returned to the World Cup after a year and earned Brazil their first World Cup points. The 24-year-old freak, who was ranked 19th after the first round, missed out on the podium by just 24 percent after clearly setting a new best result in the second round. He celebrated his success at the finish with a flamenco dance and loud cheers from his friend Artelle McGrath, who pushed him off the lead in the afternoon after a long lead.

Odermatt falls after a lightning start

The Swiss giant slalom ace had a rough start to the new season. For Odermatt, the first round was over after 40 seconds, for Luik Maillard it was over before it even started.

Maillard injured his back while driving and was unable to compete at all. Odermatt got off to an impressive start with first place, but just like the last race at Saalbach last spring, he was left in the giant slalom series after twelve World Cup wins. The game was broken and eliminated. The man from Unterwalden slipped on his inside ski on a steep slope.

Before his slip-up error, Odermatt was seven-tenths faster than Steen Olsen, who was already in the lead after the first run. The overall giant slalom and World Cup champion of the past three years took the defeat in stride. “It's a shame, but I'm not sad at all,” the 27-year-old said. «I rode really well at the top of the mountain. It's all so simple and feels so good. I'm really excited to start the season in first place. Maybe I'm a little too positive. Well, the series was not broken, no goals were conceded – I will go into it with a positive attitude. ” (Ritz/SDA)
