Sir Ian McKellen appeared to shake off his latest stage injury woes as he partied at a popular gay nightclub over the weekend.

The 85-year-old took time out to dance with two topless hunks at Roast, a men-only club night in north London.

While most of the partygoers were scantily clad, the Lord of the Rings actor showed off his svelte figure in a vintage floral red shirt.

An attendee at the party on Saturday evening told Mail Online: 'Everyone was stunned when they saw him on the dance floor.

'Sir Ian had a great time soaking up the party atmosphere. He looked like he didn't have a care in the world.

'You wouldn't have guessed that he was in hospital only a few months ago.

'He had many people approach him to send their best wishes. One attendee was a fan of his work in the Lord of the Rings films, as he greeted the star as 'Gandalf the Gay.'

The joke, said to be taken in good humor, is a reference to Sir Ian's role in the Tolkien adaptations.

The Roast Club's Instagram page reposted a picture of the actor at the scene, with one Lord of the Rings fan writing: 'Gandalf flakes at every battle but turns up the roast.'

Tickets for the two-week event are on sale for £23, with thrill-seekers partying until 6am.

It describes itself as 'London's beefiest club night' and features ten DJs over five floors and 'a huge dark room'.

A darkroom is a place where people can engage in discreet intimate activities in a private setting with dim lighting.

There is no suggestion that Sir Ian visited that part of the club.

The actor, who played Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry IV, was hospitalized and suffered a shrunken spine and broken bones, forcing him to pull out of the rest of the run.

He later said he was 'embarrassed' and 'emotional' for letting West End audiences down, adding that he realized he 'didn't have much time left'.

Sir Ian came out as gay in 1988 at the age of 49, admitting it was a life-changing moment for him.

He told Variety: 'Almost overnight everything in my life changed for the better – my relationships with people and my whole attitude towards acting.'

Ian admits that coming out actually had a huge impact on his acting career.

The star explained: 'What I did well was in disguise – adopting funny voices and odd gaits.

'It's about lying to the world. There is no longer a situation where I am running around explaining that character to the audience. I became the character.'

Ian also said he felt it was difficult for non-gay people to relate to his struggle.

The veteran actor said: 'People who aren't gay don't know how lying about what you are and being ashamed of yourself can damage you.

'I was brought up at a time when it was illegal to have sex with a man. It wasn't that long ago,' he added.
