Severe storms ravage Sydney as Australians are warned to prepare for flash floods on their way home

Storms hit Sydney and major surrounding areas, and the city was hit by heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning just after 3 p.m. local time on Monday.

Severe storms are bringing heavy rainfall which could cause flash flooding in Gosford, Sydney, Penrith, Parramatta, Campbelltown and Taralga over the next few hours.

The weather office provided an update around 3:40 p.m., saying severe thunderstorms in the warning area had weakened temporarily.

“However, the recurrence of severe storms is still possible. The situation is being closely monitored and further detailed warnings will be issued if necessary,” the warning reads.

At 3.30pm, the Canterbury office rain gauge showed over 23mm of rain since 9am.

More than 10mm of rain has been recorded across a large area between Tamworth and Muswellbrook since 9am.

Some flights to and from Sydney have been delayed or canceled due to the continuing weather.

Sydney Airport encouraged travelers to check with their airlines for updates on their flights.

Lightning strikes on Monday afternoon left thousands of people on the New South Wales and Central Coast without power.

Almost 4,000 Ausgrid customers in Freshwater, Curl Curl, North Manly, Brookvale, Bexley, Kingsgrove and Hurstville experienced power outages from 3pm.

The supplier assumed that the power would be restored by 5:30 p.m.
