The President of the Federation is rarely so deceived. At Bellevue Palace, our own official residence. In the presence of invited guests, including those from friendly countries. Frank-Walter Steinmeier was embarrassed on Thursday by celebrations commemorating East Germany's peaceful revolution that ultimately led to Germany's reunification 35 years ago.
Dissident and writer Marco Martin delivered a 15-minute German lie from the podium, accusing Russia of transition and social democratic errors in its policies. When he spoke directly of Steinmeier's work as foreign minister, the audience burst into spontaneous applause in awe of disbelief. Neighbors in Steinmeier's front row applauded.
“Come at me angrily”
This is one of those moments that should be etched in the collective memory. Like when Beate Klarfeld slapped Chancellor Kissinger (who had a Nazi past). Like Joschka Fischer’s obscene name for the Speaker of the Bundestag. Like Wolf Biermann’s Bundestag speech to left-wing MPs.
Steinmeier was lucky that all eyes that day were on the ousting of Finance Minister Christian Lindner – otherwise media representatives might have noticed that the federal president then reportedly angrily quarreled with the impressive man Unpleasant speaker confrontation.
Marco Martin confirmed the situation: “Steinmeier rushed towards me in anger.” Even the bystanders could not calm him down.
What makes Steinmeier so nervous?
Martin succeeded in what apparently no one in the Federal Presidential Office expected: to establish a coherent link between the East German revolution and the SPD's failed eastern policy. From the ideological legacy of the SED dictatorship to Egon Baar’s West German jingoism against Eastern Europe. From the Germans’ idea of peace to Gerhard Schröder to Nord Stream 2 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Martin reveals the so-called reassessment of German social democracy:
«It seems this disdain is disguised as geopolitics and realpolitik [gegenüber Osteuropa] It continues to this day. Gerhard Schröder remains an unrepentant, self-proclaimed first-name friend of the Kremlin mass murderers, and the new general secretary of the Chancellor's Party has assured him that he still has a role in German social democracy a place. “
Recently, this statement by Matthias Miersch, the new general secretary of the German Social Democratic Party, shocked even the party.
Martin did not stop with Milsch, but took over from Steinmeier, who had been in charge of German foreign policy for many years.
“Incidentally, this also strikes the same fear among Eastern Europeans and established social democrats who heard in 2016 from the mouth of the then foreign minister that NATO exercises to protect democracies on the eastern flank were a 'threat of force'. And War Cry.” The latter is a direct quote from Steinmeier.
«The sound of swords and war cries? Dear Mr. Federal President, with all due respect there is no cheap argument: despite all well-founded criticisms, the Nord Stream project that the SPD and CDU have long insisted on is only “a bridge” in this regard – Yours 2022 words in the spring of 2016 – further emboldening Putin's aggressiveness that he believed the Germans, otherwise moralizing champions of the world, would not give up their lucrative business, Ukraine or not. “
“I was clearly not invited to criticize”
Steinmeier remained calm during his speech, but already appeared nervous. These words and the situation at Bellevue Palace apparently offended him so much that he subsequently confronted Martin (see source).
“He immediately reaches the level where politicians are trying to solve problems and intellectuals make everything more difficult,” Martin said.
“It sounds like a knowledge of power that all the mortals running around down there complaining and moralizing have no idea of the logic of.”
Martin concluded: “I was clearly not invited to criticize.”
