Rose of Versailles anime movie reveals new trailer and 2025 release

The new Rose of Versailles anime movie is confirmed to premiere in early 2025, about forty-five years since the broadcast of the anime based on Riyoko Ikeda’s manga.

The production of Rose of Versailles was announced back in September 2022 and is being animated by Studio MAPPA. Since the original anime ran over forty years ago, a cast change was expected.

Miyuki Sawashiro will play the protagonist Oscar. Aya Hirano will play Marie Antoinette, Kazuki Kato will voice Hans Axel von Fersen, and Andre will be played by Toshiyuki Toyonaga.

Here’s a full look at the film’s new visual:

Ai Yoshimura is the announced director, Tomoko Komparu is the main screenwriter. Hiroyuki Sawano, a veteran and well-reputed music producer, will be in charge of the score along with Kohta Yamamoto. Mariko Ota is the character designer.

The trailer for the new film is also revealed:

Rose of Versailles is set during the French Revolution and tells the travails of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a beautiful woman who was raised as a man and is a soldier, and Marie Antoinette, a young queen who came to France from Austria.

The series was serialized in Weekly Margaret of Shueisha from 1972 to 1973, and was adapted into a stage play by the Takarazuka Revue, as well as a TV anime in 1979, and a movie.

Udon Entertainment, the publisher of the English version of the manga, describes the story as such:

Oscar François de Jarjeyes is a young noblewoman raised as a son by her father. As commander of Marie Antoinette’s palace guard, Oscar is brought face-to-face with the luxury of King Louis XVI’s court at Versailles. Joined by her servant André, Oscar is privy to the intrigue and deceit of France’s last great royal regime.
