Rescued male in critical condition after two-alarm blaze in North York

One person is in critical condition after being rescued by firefighters on Tuesday night from an apartment building in North York.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said on the social-media site X at 8:49 p.m. that a person was rescued from a 10th-floor unit at 5949 Yonge St., north of Finch Ave., before being “immediately” treated at the scene and sent to a hospital, via Toronto Paramedic Services, in critical condition.

“The first priority for our @Toronto_Fire crews is always rescue and saving lives,” Pegg said. “Tonight, during the course of search and rescue operations at 5949 Yonge St., our crews located and rescued one occupant from a suite on the 10th floor.”

Toronto Police said on X that officers, fire officials and paramedics responded to a fire in the Yonge-Cummer Ave. area at 7:08 p.m. and that a man was transported to a hospital in life-threatening condition.

There was no word on the cause of the blaze.

Pegg said the two-alarm fire had been extinguished and that Toronto Fire, Toronto Police and the Office of the Fire Marshal were investigating the incident.

“Residents are now being allowed to return to their units,” he said. “Our crews will remain on scene as operations and investigations continue.”
