More than a decade after the last installment in the series, fans are still searching Shrek 5 to take them back to Far, Far Away. Release date announced

Just weeks after confirming that the project was already in production, the latest news confirms a release date for Shrek 5. Now the long-awaited return of Far Far Away is upon us will hit theaters on July 1, 2026clearly positioning itself as a summer hit. The news was brought to you by Dreamworks Animation via their X (formerly Twitter) in a short video that not only revealed the release date, but also announced that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz would return.

Unlike other franchises, the future Shrek the videos were blocked from the beginning and Shrek 5 theoretically it has been confirmed since the premiere Shrek 2 in 2004. Now the long awaited one Shrek 5 has found a place in the schedule and will debut in cinemas that day July 1, 2026. With such a tight schedule, it's possible that the release date will be pushed back at some point, but an early July spot is perfect for a summer blockbuster like Shrek 5.

Shrek, Fiona and Donkey will return

The most important question that arises Shrek 5 that was the status of the beloved main cast, but recent updates have confirmed that the original trio will return. Having been the franchise's biggest cheerleader in recent years, Eddie Murphy has confirmed his return as Donkey IN Shrek 5cast. Likewise, Mike Myers' return as the lovable ogre Shrek wasn't a surprise, given his enthusiasm for potential sequels. The only question mark was the return of Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, as the actor largely withdrew from the spotlight. Luckily, Diaz has since come out of “retirement” and will voice the character.

As for the rest of the cast, it's highly likely Antonio Banderas could reprise his role as Puss in Bootsbut the actor hasn't signed on yet. The Shrek a franchise often employs a solid group of supporting guest stars, and it will need some new players to keep the story fresh. Other returning characters are less certain, but recurring fairy tale characters like the Gingerbread Man and Pinocchio could also return to annoy Shrek and company once again.
