A Pokemon fan found their original Pokemon Red cartridge with a legit Mew at their parents’ house. The original Pokemon Red and Blue were released in Japan in 1996, and launched a massive multimedia franchise that remains a worldwide phenomenon to this day.

The original Pokemon Red and Blue challenged players to catch 151 Pokemon, though only 150 are possible to collect in the games themselves. And even then, someone that wants to get 150 Pokemon in Pokemon Red and Blue needs a Link Cable to connect Red and Blue to trade the version-exclusive Pokemon. Number 151, Mew, was only available through special distribution events.

Pokemon Fan Discovers Old Game Boy Color With Pokemon Red and 20 Year Old Save

One such event took place in the early 2000s. Reddit user BrwnSuperman participated, securing a legitimate version of Mew for themselves, as opposed to the glitch/hacked/Game Shark variants that others may have added to their collection of monsters. BrwnSuperman recently rediscovered their red Game Boy Pocket at their parents’ house, complete with their Pokemon Red cartridge and Mew still intact, powered by batteries that were still working 14 years later.

Many Reddit users were impressed by the discovery, with the post getting an astonishing 41,000 upvotes on the site and counting. Many users in the comment joked about how they obtained their Mew through more illegitimate means, while others encouraged BrwnSuperman to back up their save file. Save batteries in cartridge games don’t last forever, and failing to back them up could mean the data gets lost forever.

This wholesome discovery came mere days ahead of Pokemon Day 2024, which takes place on Tuesday, February 27. This year’s Pokemon Day event will kick off with a special Pokemon Presents event, scheduled to take place at 6:00am PST on February 27. There have been no clues as to what fans can expect from the Pokemon Presents announcements, but many are hoping to see brand-new Pokemon games get revealed.

Typically, the annual Pokemon Day events feature announcements for ongoing Pokemon games like Pokemon Unite and Pokemon GO, as well as reveals for brand-new Pokemon games that may be in development. Rumors have persisted that games related to Generation 2 and 5 could very well be in the works for the Nintendo Switch, but fans should keep their expectations in check.
