Highlights
- Mauga’s lack of Epic and Legendary skins in Overwatch 2 is a disappointing step back, clashing with the positive aspects of his rollout.
- Currently, Mauga only has basic recolors, a shop design, and a battle pass-exclusive skin, leaving fans of cosmetics confused about his limited lineup.
- Fans hope that Blizzard will address the complaints and add more skins that can be earned for Mauga, as they have come to expect a few free Epic and Legendary unlocks for new heroes in the game.
Mauga is officially playable in Overwatch 2, and while the Samoan Tank is stronger than he was during his trial period thanks to some much-needed buffs, he is missing Legendary and Epic skins in his hero gallery. With Overwatch 2 previously criticized for its lack of free cosmetics to grind for, a criticism it has worked to address, this seems like a disappointing step back.
What makes this skin situation so disappointing is how exceptional the Mauga rollout has been apart from that. Not only did the trial period allow for a more balanced official release, but Mauga received an exciting animated short in the form of “A Great Day.” This came in addition to his origin story trailer as well as the new hero trailer that highlighted his abilities, with Blizzard doing a solid job of keeping players interested in Mauga prior to his debut. However, even with so much to praise, fans of Overwatch 2‘s cosmetics are confused about his barren skin lineup.
Overwatch 2 Considering Reworks for Wrecking Ball and Cassidy
Overwatch 2 is currently considering a rework for the first-person shooter’s most unique hero, as well as its resident sharp-shooting outlaw.
Thus far, Mauga’s skins are limited to just basic recolors of his default outfit, a Shop design, and a Battle Pass-exclusive attire. The cosmetics available for Mauga are:
- Lava (Rare)
- Ocean (Rare)
- Palm (Rare)
- Sand (Rare)
- Magma (Shop Legendary)
- Bonesplinter (Battle Pass Legendary)
As shown by Reddit user TheEdgesterReddit, this means that Mauga has no Epic skins whatsoever, nor does he have any Legendaries that can be bought with Overwatch 2 credits. This is a major change from what fans have come to expect, as previously, heroes have had two Legendaries and two Epics that they can unlock with the game’s free currency. While one of these two options is always just a recolor, having free unlocks is still beneficial, as it gives fans of each new hero something to work toward. For Mauga players who do not buy the Battle Pass or Shop skins, though, their only options are Rare recolors of his basic design.
For years, fans have seen each new hero get a handful of free skins to unlock as soon as they are added, and Blizzard subverting those expectations has led to a number of negative comments on the post. Perhaps Mauga’s free Epics and Legendaries simply are not ready yet and will come later, as one of Illari’s Epic skins was added to her Hero Gallery weeks after she initially released. However, there is no telling if that will actually happen, as Mauga could just as easily start a new trend where new heroes do not have any Epics or Legendaries outside the Shop and Battle Pass. For now, fans have to be patient and hope that Blizzard acknowledges the complaints about Mauga’s small skin lineup.
As for what Epics and Legendaries would make sense for Mauga, fans already have a few ideas. Namely, players have suggested that the red Hawaiian shirt design that was used to tease his debut on the Samoa map would make for a nice skin, as would the Talon armor he wore in Baptiste’s short story “What You Left Behind.”
