Controversy with Elon Musk
The US company is a non-profit organization founded in 2015 by Tesla boss Elon Musk and tech entrepreneur Sam Altman, among others. Currently, it aims to become a “benefit corporation” – a non-profit, for-profit company – to attract more investment.
Musk resigned in 2018 and has taken legal action against OpenAI several times since then. Most recently, he described the company as “a de facto for-profit subsidiary of Microsoft.”
Tesla boss Musk has repeatedly warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence, even describing artificial intelligence as “our greatest existential threat.” At the same time, the world's richest man in the stock market is investing heavily in artificial intelligence and founded his own artificial intelligence development company, xAI.
Elon Musk files for injunction against OpenAI
Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in March over its business adjustments. In the lawsuit, the tech billionaire argued that the company is a nonprofit organization. However, it is now actually a for-profit subsidiary of software company Microsoft.
With the release of the first version of chatbot ChatGPT in 2022, OpenAI is making generative AI technology available to a broad audience for the first time. OpenAI, under the leadership of its boss Altman, has become a global market leader in artificial intelligence.
