It's fun on many levels, from the joy of comedy to the cozy crime, the thrill of playing along to try to solve the case, delighting in the incredible chemistry of its amateur detectives. But one of the greatest joys is watching old friends and colleagues Martin Short and Steve Martin mercilessly mock each other's character and press tour.
As Oliver and Charles (or Short and Martin) rub off on each other, you can feel the deep bond of brotherhood that spanned the decades leading up to the 1986 comedy gem. Three friends. In season 4 episode 9, “Escape from Planet Clongo”, Charles and Oliver Lot A public fight on the set of Ron Howard's latest film. Pushed to the limit by Oliver's demands for a high-profile stag party, Charles called him “intolerable”, both dressed in mo-cap suits in front of the supporting cast and production crew. However, after a while, Charles apologizes and the two go to lunch at a Chinese restaurant called Red Dragon Palace.
“You know we'll be friends until the end,” Oliver says as they sit down. Charles can't handle emotional honesty, so the couple hides behind their menus when they have a heart-to-heart conversation. While Oliver assures Charles that they will be friends for life, he insists, “We can get colonoscopies together.”

In Short's fascinating 2014 autobiography, I have to say: my career as a humble comedy legend.briefly described this annual tradition. He, Martin, Tom Hanks (who also appears in this episode), and producer Walter Parks gather for a sleepover at Steve Martin's house. They play poker in the evenings, eat Jell-O and salsa, and spend enough time in the bathroom to cleanse their systems for the next day's exam. In the book, Short makes it clear that they were not in the same room when the exam was taken. But they all drive together to their synchronous meetings and go out for lunch and margaritas.
