I I didn't even pick up a single powder eyeshadow on my recent vacation to Greece. Creamy long-wear shadows are more capable of standing firm during hot weather, humidity, swimming pools, monsoons, active lifestyles and erratic hormone levels.

Among the most powerful is Make Up Forever Aqua Resist Smoky Shadow stick (£20). I picked this up in Sunrise, a gorgeous, universally flattering golden top shade, and wore it across my top lids and swiped it down my bottom for a couple of weeks. It looked relaxed, casually beautiful, and when I say it didn't budge, I mean: One night, after oversleeping on Netflix, I woke up at 4 a.m. and stumbled into the bathroom, my eye makeup still not set. Despite sweltering in the scorching heat for 19 hours.

Revlon's ColorStay? Cream eyeshadow (£7.99) is similarly stiff and can be swiped straight from the pot onto the eyelid with a fingertip. It can withstand seemingly anything but cleansing, and the caramel shade suits every skin tone.

The problem with both the Make Up Forever and Revlon shadows is that they are all shimmery. Like metallic nail polishes, shimmer shades seem to have more longevity than their matte counterparts, but give off a more summery look while gently catching the light. In winter, the mats are smart and very docile.

For a similarly easy application and minus the shine for a long-lasting finish, I always recommend a Bobbi Brown is longWear a cream shadow stick (£29.50). I'd be reluctant to do so again just for originality, but the truth is, these represent a gold standard that no other brand has yet matched.

They are very blendable, rich, well-considered, wearable shades and last longer than anything I've tried. I am not without Taupe shade – a seemingly boring but endlessly useful and chic looking neutral mousey brown – and Pale Sand Dune, a beige brown.

Both can be scribbled on lids up to the socket line, then swept out beyond with a clean, fluffy, medium-sized brush. ) and leave it or layer under a dark shade.

There are also heaps of shimmery shades, and if they're your cuppa, there's something about Evers' make-up for the perfect sunrise shade – not too warm or too cool – that isn't represented in the Bobbi Brown range.
