What is better than robots? Strong anime characters that kill robots. In the anime community, it is fairly rare that a female character is the primary protagonist and even rarer where she kills other creatures or evil entities. At Anime Expo 2023, we met with NIS America to preview their upcoming games that are set to release in 2023 and 2024. Their booth featured a demo for Disgaea 7, CRYMACHINA, RHAPSODY: MARL KINGDOM CHRONICLES, Trails into Reverie, and other games. Anime guests could play the game demos, get stamps on their fans, buy merchandise, and get a reward for playing the games. Fans could also get pictures with cosplayers Disgaea 7 cosplayers.
At PAX West 2023, we met with NIS American again to see how Disgaea 7 and CRYMACHINA have progressed. When visiting the booth, we discovered that the Disgaea 7 demo was the same one as the one at Anime Expo; however, the CRYMACHINA demo picked up where the Anime Expo demo left off. As the group is united, Leben learns how she has come to be where she is and what is going on. Once moving through the level, the player can experience the colorful and sci-fi level design. The demo gives players two options, go down the linear path and fight the area’s normal boss or go down the lasered hallway.
For the demo, we went down the linear path to fight Murphy, Slayer of Wisdom. The boss fight was fairly easy to navigate with most of the enemy’s moves being easy to predict. Visually everything from the beginning to the end boss fight gave a fun cyberpunk vibe. The combat can be challenging at times, but if you are a fan of souls-like games, then you should be able to adapt easily.
