Yoko Taro’s NieR: Automata is certainly one of the most beloved JRPGs of the past decade, and it has just achieved a new sales milestone.
According to an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), the game has sold 8 million copies worldwide (more precisely, the combination of physical shipments to retailers and digital sales), which is most definitely a great achievement that not many have likely seen coming seven years ago. It’s an update from the 7.5 million copies in April 2023.
The game is in fact celebrating its seventh anniversary, having launched in Japan on February 23, 2017. Western gamers had to wait a little longer, as it was released on March 7 in North America and March 10 in Europe. This was actually rather peculiar, as seven years ago Square Enix already released most of its games simultaneously worldwide.
NieR: Automata is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It was initially a PS4 exclusive, but over the years it expanded to other platforms, certainly reaping the benefits in terms of popularity.
Fans have been waiting for some news about the series for quite a while, and a few months ago Producer Yosuke Saito teased a “surprise” and a “big announcement” possibly coming in the early part of 2024.
This comes after he expressed confidence earlier in 2023 that Yoko Taro would do another NieR game at some point, promising to find the budget for it when that happens.
If you’re interested in NieR: Automata, you can now experience its protagonist 2B in a completely different way thanks to her recent inclusion as a DLC guest character in Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, part of what appears to be a very active quest to put her into pretty much every game in existence.
Considering that I love 2B, this is not a complaint.
