Today’s Niche Games Spotlight is Necrowave, a hand-animated 2D metroidvania game inspired by Hollow Knight and the visuals of Samurai Jack.
Necrowave is described as “the emotional life of a zombie stuck in a microwave” and it’s being developed by sole indie developer Arfhis The Wizard, a programmer and self-taught animator that started learning to make his own games.
Necrowave is being developed for Windows PC and is an ongoing project for Arfhis as he funds the project with a frequently-updated Patreon page, which also has a public demo for the game available.
It’s worth noting the game is stylized and colored in a way so that it’s friendly for color-blind gamers, as Arfhis himself is colorblind. If you want to get the latest build of the game and all of its updates, you have to become a backer on the Necrowave Patreon.
Characters in the game are described as an extension of the protagonist, a zombie that seemingly died by a microwave, and has replaced his butt with one.
Earlier animations and designs had a more stocky zombie with a microwave pelvis – its latest iteration has a gnarled and twisted ghoul that hunches over with an exposed ribcage.
Here’s the latest trailer for the game:
