Today Furyu detailed its upcoming action JRPG Reynatis and released the first full trailer showcasing a look at the story and gameplay.
The action JRPG, which was presented at the latest Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, is actually multiplatform. It’ll come for PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
The Japanese release date is July 25 with pre-orders starting today, while no Western release date has been announced for the moment.
Reynatis’ story if by Kazushige Nojima, writer of many Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games, including the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The music is by Yoko Shimomura, also known for her work on the same series among many other beloved games. The character design is by illustrator Yasutaka Kaburagi.
The game is set in a world in which some people can use magic and some cannot. Wizards are feared and considered dangerous by the general population, so they live isolated, hiding their identity.
In 2024, in the Tokyo ward of Shibuya people asked to stay indoors due to the Anti-Magic Act. Yet, few respect it anymore. Marin Kirizumi is a magic user and has lived all his life “suppressed.” He will be “liberated” only when he becomes the strongest.
Following these words from his father, he goes to Shibuya to obtain his freedom.
On the other hand, Sari Nishijima awakens to magic and decides to use her power for the sake of order. She uses her power to protect Shibuya from people turned into monsters by illegal drugs and gangs. Marin seeks liberation, while Sari sees the suppression of wizards as justice.
The story starts to unfold when they meet in Shibuya, a place where different cultures and ideas intermingle.
The setting includes Shibuya, which is reproduced in detail with many recognizable landmarks like the Scramble Crossing, Shibuya Center-Gai, Miyashita Park, Dogenzaka, and Spain-zaka Slope. Walking around the city you can recognize stores like Shibuya 109 and more.
The city hides the entrance of another world beyond the fog. It’s a world full of magic with open plains, forests, and wilderness, on top of facilities shrouded in mystery.
In battle, you can switch at the press of a button between Suppressed and Liberated mode. In Suppressed mode, you can’t attack at all, but you can evade enemy attacks at the press of a single button. In Liberated mode, you can destroy your enemy with your spells, but you have no defense. Due to that, the timing of switching between the modes is crucial.
In Suppressed mode, you can explore peacefully and talk with NPC while hiding your identity as a mage. On the other hand, you can traverse using magic in Liberated mode, but you risk being reported to law enforcement.
Marin seeks the depths of the other world while hunting for power. Sari acts to protect the safety of Shibuya. The story alternates between their points of view, and in the meanwhile a third faction, the “guild” emerges.
