Nations League: Van Dijk sees red for Dutch, Germany's Undau scores twice | League of Nations

Denzel Dumfries scored a late equaliser Netherlands To salvage a point in a 1-1 draw Hungary Their Nations League game in Budapest on Friday left the visitors with 10 men after their captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off.

Hungary took the lead on 32 minutes when Tijjani lost possession in the Rangers midfield and Zsolt Nagy's cross was headed at the back post by Roland Sallai.

The Dutch created plenty of chances but headed for a disappointing defeat, with Van Dijk picking up two yellow cards in the space of three minutes before Dumfries' Cody Cockbow's free-kick equalised.

Hungary were hoping for a first win over the Netherlands in 40 years, but ended a run of nine straight defeats against the Dutch.

It was a game of possession for the visitors as they tried to hit Hungary on the break, which they managed to do thanks to Sallain's brilliantly finished opener. Before that, Dominik Szoboslai curled his effort against the woodwork and hit the post which fed into the edge of the box.

The Netherlands had more than 80% possession in the first half but didn't create many chances, although Kakpo forced a good low save from Hungary goalkeeper Denes Dibus.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first half. Reijnders only had to beat Dibusz but delayed his shot and forced himself wide with a heavy touch to deny the chance, when he crossed a ball to Dumfries, who would have beaten the back post and left the latter.

The visitors were down to 10 men for the final 11 minutes, before Van Dijk was yellow carded for dissent and booked for the second time as the Dutch grew in frustration. Dumfries' powerful header from Kakbow's delivery gave them a point that looked set to end in frustration.

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman will not call up a replacement for van Dijk before the crucial trip. Germany on Monday, but was confused by the defender's dispatch.

On the first yellow card, Koeman said: “That moment was frustrating. I don't understand that. I think we agreed that a captain can protest the umpire. That's wrong [on Malen] Good for the red card. No intention of playing ball. Virgil is not comfortable taking that second card. He knows that.”

The Germany Forward Denis Undau scored two first-half goals in six minutes to seal a 2-1 win. Bosnia and Herzegovina And make them top of their group.

The Germans, who lost several players to injury including Jamal Musiala, Niklas Fulkrug and Aleksandar Pavlovic, were in control from the start but had no clear-cut chances against the disciplined hosts apart from a Pascal cross shot off target.

Undau finished first-time from his back to the Bosnia goal when Robert Andrich floated a cross for Florian Wirtz. The striker doubled their advantage six minutes later when he pounced on Maximilian Mittelstadt's cross. The visitors should have scored more and put the ball in the net three more times before the attempts were ruled out for offside.

Bosnia reduced the deficit after Edin Dzeko's header in the 70th minute created a late tension, but they were unable to equalise.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said, “Overall I am satisfied with the performance. “We didn't allow many counter attacks. We probably had too few goals for the dominance we had. But after conceding a goal and making a few substitutions, we have to see how much we want to go for the third goal. And had to think about the next game on Monday [against the Netherlands].”

Germany lead Group A3 with seven points from three games, with the Dutch in second place from five. Hungary are in both places and Bosnia in last place on one point.
