The tragic accident of Pascal Grosjean (no relation to former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean) demonstrates how close joy and sorrow are. Twelve laps later, the French-speaking Swiss rider became the first rider to cross the finish line in the Dubai Superbike race. On the final lap, the 39-year-old slowed down to celebrate his victory in style. Unfortunately, third place Tony Jordan apparently failed to notice the decrease in speed and collided with Grosjean 300 meters after the finish line at an estimated speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

Second place finisher Jason Burnside described the dramatic scene this way: “We had just crossed the finish line, nodding to each other and walking side by side. As we were high-fiving each other, he was suddenly shot down.”

A track doctor arrived immediately and attended to both riders. The motorcyclist, from Saint-Oyen in canton Vaud, was taken to hospital by helicopter. All that could be found was the news of Grosjean's death, which was not announced until the next day. The talented Yamaha rider has won multiple championships in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Superbike series in previous years.

Carissa Crowley, marketing manager for the 'Gros Gros' racing team driven by Grosjean, spoke of the “huge loss”. “He had big dreams,” Crowley continued.

So he hopes to get popular drivers from Europe to compete in winter races to boost local motorsport. Grosjean opened a racing driving school in the city and trained other motorcycle pilots in the area. His parents had gasoline running in their blood. His father was a director of the Swiss Motorcycle Association and his mother raced motorcycles herself.

Dubai Racecourse director Hamish Brown expressed condolences on behalf of the race management: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pascal Grosjean and extend our condolences to his family and friends.”

“He was equally loyal and fun off the track.”

The perpetrator, Tony Jordan, was also seriously injured and his life was in danger. The Briton will then be treated in the same intensive care unit from which Grosjean was transferred. Race boss Brown also said of the second accident victim: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Tony and his family. We wish him all the best and hope his critical condition improves quickly.”

Prayers went unanswered. After a long period of pain, Tony Jordan was knocked unconscious from injuries sustained in an accident in October 2012.
