Mortal Kombat 1 Dev Gives Update on Crossplay Plans

  • Crossplay for Mortal Kombat 1 will be available in February 2024, but not on the Nintendo Switch version.
  • The update will also include a Wi-Fi filter to improve online gameplay experience.
  • Patch notes for the game’s next update will be released soon, with additional balance changes and bug fixes detailed.

Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm Studios shares an update regarding its crossplay plans, revealing that the much-anticipated feature will arrive in February 2024. However, crossplay will not be supported in the Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the 12th mainline entry in the long-running fighting game series, acting as a soft reboot following the events of Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath DLC. The game launched on September 19 with a variety of single-player and multiplayer modes, but crossplay was not one of the supported features at launch. This past November, game director Ed Boon teased that crossplay would come to Mortal Kombat 1 in the near future, with additional features such as ping and Wi-Fi filters being under consideration. Boon also held a Twitter poll, allowing Mortal Kombat fans to vote for their most desired online feature. Crossplay was the most-voted option by a considerable margin, but NetherRealm did not share any specific details about the feature until the December 13 Kombat Kast livestream.

Seasonal Johnny Cage Outfit Has Mortal Kombat 1 Fans Furious

A newly-released purchasable seasonal outfit for Johnny Cage garners unanimously negative reactions from many Mortal Kombat 1 fans.

During the latest Kombat Kast, developers from NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the crossplay update will be released in February 2024 for Mortal Kombat 1 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 will not receive crossplay, likely because of technical limitations regarding this version of the game. Moreover, NetherRealm confirms the aforementioned Wi-Fi filter will be added to Mortal Kombat 1 in an update as well. The Wi-Fi filter allows players to turn down matches based on an opponent’s internet connection quality, allowing them to avoid hindrances such as lag and disconnects.

The developers state that patch notes for Mortal Kombat 1’s latest update will be released soon, detailing additional balance changes, game adjustments, and bug fixes. This update will also bring various gameplay tweaks to Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo fighters such as Kano and Sonya Blade. Since Quan Chi will make his Mortal Kombat 1 debut on December 14 for Kombat Pack owners, the update is expected to be released sometime within the next week. Quan Chi will be released on December 21 for all Mortal Kombat 1 players.

Although the Nintendo Switch version will not reap the benefits of crossplay, a notable portion of the Mortal Kombat 1 player base will finally be able to play online matches together. In addition, crossplay helps ensure that players will be able to find online matches more quickly and consistently since the player pool will be shared between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
