Miranda Hart, 51, reveals she split with her husband shortly before popping the question – admitting she always believed her 'hopes of finding love were slim'.

Miranda Hart breaks up with her husband before proposing to him at Kew Gardens.

The comedian surprised fans this week when he announced he was married at the age of 51, but now admits his relationship has had its challenges.

In her new book I've Never Been Completely Honest With You, Miranda admits she split from her husband 'briefly' after believing her 'hope of finding love was very slim'.

“I admitted that I longed for love within a romantic relationship, for someone who really got me, but my hope for that was very slim,” she admitted.

But even after meeting her building surveyor husband when he came to fix a mold problem at their £2million home, Miranda took a step back from the commitment: 'I don't need to run'.

'I was vulnerable, yet I felt dignified. I showed him the stupidest me, the annoying me, the cheating me, the unadorned me, the tearful me, the deep me. I fully believed he was there because he liked me.

The real-life Bridget Jones revealed on Tuesday night's One Show that she married the building surveyor aged 51 this year after he proposed in Kew Gardens, west London.

The comedian has not revealed his identity in his new book I Haven't Been Completely Honest With You, referring simply to 'The Boy' or 'The Mold Man'.

The man he met when he came to fix a mold problem at his £2 million home was described as 'a great looking man with graying salt-and-pepper hair'.

The news was first announced by the comedian after the rumors spread that he had married live on The One Show on Tuesday night.

Alex Jones and Alex Scott speak to her mystery husband, Miranda, 51, who revealed she met 'my man' at the age of 49 and declared 'someone put a ring on it'.

The actress went into detail in her memoir about how she popped the question, explaining that her boyfriend suggested the couple go to the garden on a 'typical January day'.

He wrote: We stood on the bridge overlooking the lake as he pierced the silence as he said seriously, 'Miranda.' I turned and he got down on one knee as I did. 'Miranda…'

'I don't remember anything else because I just burst into tears and apparently said yes before he finished the sentence (worse if he had tied a shoelace…)'

She wrote emotionally: 'I never thought a traditional proposal would affect me so much.

'But someone who knew all my absurdity and brokenness was still willing to stoop down and see me and love me and stand by me for life.'

Miranda later described her husband as 'loving, loving and very funny,' before dramatically writing: 'He's not my boyfriend. He is my husband. We got married when I was fifty-one.'

During her excited announcement on The One Show, she said: 'I got married, I got married at 51, it's so wonderful!'

I have written Gary [Tom Ellis] It wasn't until I was 49 that Miranda on screen and I met my man,' she declared, but insisted she would keep her husband's identity a secret.

'A little bit of an undercurrent in the book, I'm not going to reveal how we met because that's a bit of a twist. He is my best friend, we had a lot of fun and I am happy to be a young bride at 51.

The star added that she hopes readers of her book will feel a sense of hope from her love story, explaining; 'I met someone during an epidemic, during a chronic illness, when he couldn't get out of bed or leave the house. No longer mine.'
