The highly anticipated launch of Flight Simulator 2024 was met with cloud disaster. American companies apologize.

Flight Simulator is not only Microsoft's oldest software product, but also one of its most popular. On Tuesday, the American company released Flight Simulator 2024 simultaneously globally. Since then, complaints from dissatisfied users have continued to increase.

Microsoft servers crashed as soon as a new version of the cult game was released. Technology portal heise.de explains that unlike its predecessor, the 2024 version not only transmits map data, but also a large number of landscape objects, aircraft models, etc. directly from the cloud.

The disaster was “almost programmed”: Microsoft didn't provide buyers with a “preload” of relevant game data. Instead, they should download everything upon launch. As a result, expectant players around the world had to stare at the loading bar for hours.

Microsoft has made improvements and enhancements to its servers. But on the day after the official launch, technical issues still persisted. While many users were able to get into the game itself, there were increasing reports of crashes or massive reductions in graphical detail.

Commentators on the well-known American technology portal “Windows Central” found a clear statement:

“I refuse to give a game a rating, even a low one, because I feel like there's nothing to rate it for. I can't properly judge the gameplay, add-on ecosystem, or peripheral compatibility just because it doesn't work in the most basic way.”

Until a developer patches the game (fixes it, so to speak) and makes it run as expected, there's almost no reason to pay the asking price to buy your own copy on Xbox or PC.

How did Microsoft react?

The company issued a statement on social media platform X on Thursday and apologized to customers:

«We have increased server capacity and noticed that more and more players are accessing the simulation. However, access issues still occur.

This was not the launch experience we intended for our players and we would like to apologize to the community. We will continue to work with our partners around the clock and provide the latest information until the issue is resolved. “

The successor to 2020's successful Flight Simulator from Microsoft and Asobo Studio has generated considerable hype ahead of its release. After the bug was announced, things only got better from the perspective of the passionate fan community.
