Marco Rubio could be Trump's secretary of state: Here's his plan

Donald Trump's foreign policy team appears to be on firm ground. Senator Marco Rubio takes over the State Department. Rep. Mike Walz will serve as the president's national security adviser.

New President Donald Trump's biggest supporters may not be particularly enthusiastic. They had been hoping to appoint a firebrand like Richard Grenell, the former U.S. ambassador to Germany, as chief diplomat. But now Trump has apparently decided to go with Marco Rubio. The New York Times reported on Monday that a senator from Florida will become the new U.S. Secretary of State.

Rubio, 53, is an extremely adaptable career politician. He was considered a reformer when he began his career at Florida State in the late 1990s. Rubio is committed to modernizing the Republican Party. He worked to reform immigration policy. He is a hawk when it comes to foreign policy, also because his parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba in the 1950s. That's why he was elected to the Senate in 2010 and is considered the future hope of the Republican Party, the anti-Obama man. (Barack Obama was the president of the United States at the time.)

During the 2016 presidential campaign at the latest, Rubio had to realize that this combination could no longer win many votes among Republican voters. Despite his recent best efforts to defeat new politician Donald Trump, he lost the primary. In return, he insults him as “Little Marco.”

Rubio is moving closer to Trump

The two men reconciled surprisingly quickly after Trump's surprising success in the presidential election. Rubio became one of the advocates of a new presidential political philosophy in the Senate. Trump and Rubio often represent the same positions, particularly when it comes to China and Iran policy.

If there was a difference, Rubio over time came closer to the father of the Republican Party. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the senator advocated for a massive U.S. response. Trump, on the other hand, initially praised Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin. Shortly before Election Day, Rubio also said: Ukraine cannot win the war with Russia, so the conflict must end.

Still, it’s hard to imagine Rubio taking immediate aggressive action against longtime State Department officials, as Richard Grenell and others have envisioned.

The man who will serve as the president’s security adviser is not a Trump hardliner either. Mike Waltz, 50, a House member since 2019, is said to have been appointed to the influential position by Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Walz is a loyal Republican in Congress but has yet to draw attention as a troublemaker. In fact, he only spoke when the shift to security policy was discussed in Washington. Waltz represents a stance that is critical of China and favors explicit support for Israel.

Whether Rubio and Walz can finally control President Trump's impulses will be revealed after President Trump takes office on January 20. In the U.S. government, the head of state ultimately determines the basic principles of foreign policy. Trump lost two secretaries of state and four national security advisers during his first term.
