Former Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann will become the new General Secretary of the FDP. This was confirmed by a party spokesman after Bild first reported the story. Buschmann was supposed to organize a campaign for party leader Christian Lindner.
“I'm extremely honored by this tremendous trust. The Liberal Party must now show that it has the best answers to get the economy moving again and protect everyone's freedoms from bureaucracy and government overreach. That's it,” Bushman told the newspaper. Our current job.”
Controversial document sparks shock within party
Liberal Democratic Party secretary-general Bijan Djir-Sarai resigned on Friday. In the process, he drew conclusions from a controversial strategy document released by the Liberal Party on phasing out traffic lights. Federal managing director Carsten Lehmann also resigned.
The FDP's so-called “D-Day” document contains detailed plans for the FDP to exit traffic lights together with the Social Democrats and the Greens. It used military terms such as “Normandy landings” and “open field fighting” to describe the possible exit of the LDP at the traffic light.
The coalition collapsed in early November amid bitter disputes over the budget and economic policy process. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (Social Democrats) blocked the Free Party's exit by firing Finance Minister Lindner.
Lindner has said that his party's working paper was never discussed in the political committee and that he knew nothing about it. He didn't blame the staff who drafted the document. “I have full responsibility for the FDP and I am committed to that,” he told ARD's “Tagesthemen” program.
Bushman knew party headquarters
Buschmann, 47, knows the Liberal Democratic Party headquarters well and is considered a close confidante of Lindner. The Gelsenkirchen native served as federal managing director of the FDP from 2014 to 2017 and as secretary-general of the FDP in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2012 to 2014. From the end of 2021 until the traffic light turns on between the SPD, Greens and FDP, Buschmann serves as federal justice minister.
After Gil-Salai resigned, Buschman tried to go on the offensive. He wrote on the X platform: “A Liberal Party is needed now more than ever. As the antithesis of state overreach and bureaucracy. As a protective force for individuals and their freedoms.” This is an important and serious matter.
The Liberal Democrats could lose at the five percent threshold
New Bundestag elections are scheduled for February 23. The Liberal Democrats have to worry about re-entry. The Liberals' electoral chances are unlikely to improve due to the turmoil of the past few days. The Liberal Democrats currently poll between 3% and 4%, so are still a long way from the critical 5% threshold, and a long way from the 11.5% for the 2021 federal election.
