Loïc Meillard is fighting for World Cup slalom victory in Levi after recovering from a back injury. After the first round, Romande was in second place behind Frenchman Clement Noel.
Maillard was just two-hundredths of a second slower than the Olympic champion on the hairpin circuit, during which things looked even better. The French-speaking Swiss rider led Noel by eighteen hundredths in the final intermediate time.

There was no sign of a disc problem that caused Maillard to miss the giant slalom at the first race of the winter in Sölden three weeks ago. Over the course of the week, Maillard already felt like his health was improving again. He finally decided to play Levy on Friday. “I can drive at full speed without thinking about my back,” Maillard said at SRF.
Nev rushes forward
Surprisingly, the second best Swiss in the intermediate rankings is Tanguy Nef. Things have rarely gone to plan for the man from Geneva recently and currently sits in sixth place, forty-eight percent behind.
Neff came into the game as the No. 28 starter and showed six years ago that the conditions were right for him. At that time he finished 11th in his World Cup debut.

The time difference from first to eighth was only 60%. Surprisingly, local Finn Eduard Hallberg finished eighth, starting in number 40, well ahead. The event is sure to be exciting, with nearly every game from previous winters providing a spectacle.
Swiss midfield duo
Daniel Yule (“Hopefully I can improve”) and Ramon Zenhäuser (“Overall I am satisfied”) are ranked 16th and 18th respectively in the provisional ranking. They finished directly behind Austrian Manuel Feller, a four-time slalom champion and last winter's disciplinary World Cup winner. Luca Erny and first-time World Cup player Reto Mahler were well behind, with Marc Rochat dropped.
One comeback is strong and one is not.
The start of the slalom race was different for the two returners. Brazil's Lucas Pinheiro Braathen was 10th, with Netherlands' Marcel Hirscher 2.59 seconds behind, clearly missing out on the second run in 47th place . Herschel ranked 30th, 72% behind. (Random Access Memory/SDA)
