The Swiss national team started the new season with a loss. At the European Hockey Tour event in Helsinki, coach Patrick Fisher's team led 2-0 before losing 2-3 in overtime to host Finland.
Last season, the Swiss lost their first eleven games on the European Hockey Tour before celebrating a late victory over the Czech Republic. Fisher said his goal this season is to achieve a balanced finish. The momentum from the World Cup silver medal should be carried forward.
For a long time it looked like a victory for Switzerland, but the visitors gave up a 2-0 lead in the final third. Robin Salo scored Finland's winning goal 71 seconds into overtime.

The score of 2-0 after two thirds was not unreasonable. Although the Swiss showed some effort in the first 20 minutes, they came up short midway through. The 1-0 (game 28) was scored by a player making his debut. Giancarlo Chanton, a 21-year-old defender from Geneva-Servette, brought the puck in from the goal line side and Ahti Oksanen fired it in own goal. Luck also came when Fabrice Herzog made it 2-0 (game 38). The Zug forward initially failed at the post before the puck bounced back through the plexiglass to the goal, where Herzog converted on his second try.
Although the Swiss team also had a good scene in the last quarter, it was still not enough to win due to two players from the National League. First, ZSC defender Mikko Lehtonen reduced the score to 1:2 (46th minute), before Harri Pesonen from SCL Tigers equalized in the 55th minute. New Finland coach Antti Peinanen is relying on nine players from the Swiss league.

Despite the defeat, the Swiss can take away some positives. Sweden is the next opponent on Saturday.
