“There is no exercise that targets specific abdominal fat. Therefore, it is not selective in this sense, but at the same time, any exercise associated with an adequate diet can promote weight loss. Body fat and, consequently, in the stomach”, Dr. Leonardo Lima, professor of Human Anatomy at Eeferp-USP (Physical Education and Sports at the University of São Paulo Ribeiro Brito) responded exclusively to the sporting life.

Therefore, the time it takes for a person to lose body fat cannot be defined because it is based first on the person's physical condition. The genetic factor and exercise strategy are considered.

“Basically, within two to three weeks, some weight loss results will start to appear. Of course, this weight loss is proportional to how necessary it is. People who already have a lot of fat (big belly) recognize these losses sooner, while people who have less fat take a little longer to notice this reduction,” said Dr. Leonardo.

Physical exercise for a sedentary person

If a sedentary person aims to lose fat mass, it is best to do an activity that pushes them to the limit. Therefore, long-duration, low-intensity aerobic exercise is “linked” to weight loss.

“This does not mean that bodybuilding is not an exercise that can help you lose weight or even play team sports, for example. The main thing is that energy expenditure is usually a little lower in weight training sessions, but this can be compensated for by frequency or weekly attendance,” explains the author.

If someone plays sports and has an unwanted belly, what should they do?

“Probably an athlete with a more prominent belly, who does not have a small waist, probably needs to worry a little more about nutrition. Part of the exercise that generates a caloric deficit with energy expenditure is already being carried out. “Perhaps the calorie intake is too high or unbalanced,” Lima said.

Do aerobics before or after exercise accelerate belly fat loss?

“At the end of the day, the process of losing weight involves expending more energy than you consume. Whether it's strength training and aerobics or aerobics before and strength after, it's inappropriate. What really matters is the total cost. Calorie intake during all exercises”, Dr. Leonardo Lima.
