One of the biggest surprise announcements of The Game Awards for 2023 was No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games announcing a brand-new game that has been under development for the last few years – Light No Fire. Where No Man’s Sky was a massive, seemingly endless map, Light No Fire sees the team making a much smaller, but no less detailed map, focused on just one planet.
It’s been a great year for Hello Games with No Man’s Sky getting a big boost in player numbers thanks to the release of Starfield earlier this year, and fans will no doubt be excited to see what the studio has in store for their next big IP.
Light No Fire release date
Unfortunately, Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray was fairly tight-lipped about the game’s release date, so we don’t have any real inkling on when the game will be coming out. We know that the game has been under development for five years already, with a small but dedicated team working on it.
Hello Games seem to have learned their lesson from the No Man’s Sky launch, where they over-promised and under-delivered somewhat, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they’ve waited until the game is near completion to reveal it. As such, there’s a possibility that, as the game is already well under development, we could see a 2024 release, or 2025 at the latest, but this is pure speculation.
Light No Fire gameplay and story
While Light No Fire will feature a procedurally generated world, just like No Man’s Sky, the actual premise of the game is significantly different. Instead of exploring a vast universe with endless planets, Light No Fire will be focused on one, Earth-sized planet filled with fantasy flora and fauna.
While not as big as the universe of No Man’s Sky, the world of Light No Fire is still expected to be massive, with the developers describing it as a “truly open world, with no boundaries [and] at a scale never attempted before.”
In addition to the survival sandbox elements of No Man’s Sky, Light No Fire appears to have a more RPG-inspired side to it too, with the game perhaps having more of a focus on story and lore than No Man’s Sky did at launch. Again, this is just speculation, and we don’t know anything about the game’s potential story yet.
Finally, just like No Man’s Sky, the game will be multiplayer, meaning you can jump in with friends to explore this massive world. While all the footage we’ve been shown so far has been multiplayer, we would assume that the game will also be available to solo players.
Light No Fire trailer
The Light No Fire reveal trailer was first released at the 2023 Game Awards show and gives us a look at some in-game multiplayer footage. Most of the trailer shows off the lush, green world of the game, filled with colourful plants and animals. As well as this, we’re shown players building houses, riding animals like horses, dragons and giant birds, and fighting a variety of hostile creatures.
We also get a glimpse of some already-existing settlements as well as what appears to be a giant, moving statue. These seem to hint at an overarching setting to the game, and potentially a deeper lore that players will have the chance to explore for themselves in-game.
That’s all we know about Light No Fire so far. If you’re after some more news from The Game Awards, then you’ll want to know all about the Monster Hunter Wilds announcement as well as news on a new Marvel game from the creators of Dishonored.
