The X Factor (2008)

Payne had her first audition for the fifth series of The X Factor in 2008, when she was 14 years old.

Judges Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Dannii Minogue and Louise Walsh judged.

He made it through to the first round of The X Factor after impressing the judges with his rendition of Frank Sinatra's 'Fly Me to the Moon'.

Although he was initially eliminated at the boot camp stage, Koval brought Paine back to the judges' arena. He was cut again during Judges' House, but was encouraged by Cowell to return in two years.

The singer returned to the show in 2010, auditioning in front of Cowell, Cole, Walsh and guest judge Natalie Imbruglia.

Following advice from former judge Nicole Scherzinger, he formed a boy band with Horan, Malik, Styles and Tomlinson.

Fan reaction was also immediate, with the 1D frenzy quickly dwarfing the show. Despite the acclaim, the band eventually finished third on The X Factor.

Cowell later admitted to Rolling Stone that it took him 'one millionth' to discover the group's global potential.

After The X Factor, One Direction was signed to Simon Cowell's Psycho Entertainment.
