The popular video game series TimeSplitters seems to have reemerged momentarily. Gameplay footage from the canceled TimeSplitters Next project was leaked and shows what could have been. A former developer at Free Radical Design posted a five-minute video to LinkedIn (since taken down), providing a glimpse into what was planned.
The footage (new upload in the link) displays elements that will likely connect with long-time fans, including well-known characters, weapons, and an extended version of the popular Siberia dam level from TimeSplitters 2. Moreover, the video unveils a quicker pace and more contemporary character movement, distinguishing it from the original games. For those who recall, when we first got some glimpses of the game, it was seen as a Fortnite clone.
Eurogamer said the project underwent a big change and became more like a traditional TimeSplitters game. This new version apparently focused on a different story in a parallel universe with Corporal Hart as the main character instead of Sergeant Cortez from the original. The leaked video matches these descriptions, showing gameplay similar to TimeSplitters 2 and new features like an open world and a gliding mechanic similar to Fortnite.
The leak comes during a tough time for Embracer Group, the owner of Free Radical Design. If you’ve followed the industry, then you’ll know Embracer has been shutting down projects and studios left and right. Free Radical Design was one of those companies shut down, ending the development of TimeSplitters Next.
The leaked footage shows what could have been. Timesplitters is a cult classic, but it probably didn’t have the large fanbase that Embracer needs to turn around the profit loss. It’s nice to know how things might have turned out.
