Today Square Enix has finally lifted the curtain on its upcoming mobile game Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, and its genre may surprise some.

The game is a GPS-powered location-based action RPG, matching the gameplay of the Kingdom Hearts series with Pokemon GO‘s mechanics. It’ll be released for iOS and Android in 2024.

While information is still scarce, a closed beta is coming and registrations are already open on the official site.

The closed beta for iOS will start on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, and end on Friday, December 8, 2023. The closed beta for Android will happen later, currently planned for January.  Applications end on November 19.

Unfortunately for those residing in other countries, only those who live in the UK and Australia are eligible, even if I suppose there are workarounds. Progress made during the beta won’t carry over to the launch version.

Interestingly, the game supports forming parties of up to 3 players, letting you challenge raid bosses together, reducing AP consumption for teleportation, and more perks.

The beta will support DualShock 4, DualSense, and Xbox controllers. There won’t be an NDA, so even those who won’t be able to play will likely have plenty of gameplay to watch.

You can check out a trailer giving a hint of the story and characters below.

If you’re unfamiliar with Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, it was revealed all the way back in April 2022 alongside Kingdom Hearts 4. We haven’t heard anything about either of them since, but finally the floodgates have opened at least for one.

The game was originally announced with a 2023 release window, but obviously, it isn’t going to make it in time.

The latest mainline Kingdom Hearts game that Square Enix has launched is Kingdom Hearts 3 four years ago in 2019, followed by its DLC Re:Mind. We also got a rhythm game spin-off titled Melody of Memoriy in 2020, so fans of the series are likely ready for something new.
