what's new?
Shortly before the end of his term, Joe Biden unexpectedly used the power of the US president to pardon his convicted son Hunter, contrary to previous statements. Biden's statement on the pardons said he has said since taking office that he would not interfere with Justice Department decisions. However, his son was treated “unfairly” by the judicial system.

Why does Biden criticize the judiciary?
Biden wrote that the accusations were instigated by several of his political opponents in Congress and were intended to hurt him politically. “No reasonable person looking at the facts of Hunter's case can draw any conclusion other than that Hunter was singled out simply because he is my son — and that is wrong.”
Biden wrote that they were trying to “destroy Hunter” and destroy him. He trusted the justice system, but in these cases, politics influenced the process and led to “miscarriage of justice.” He battled with himself and made the decision over the weekend to pardon his son.

Biden has repeatedly said he would not do so. His term ends with the transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump on January 20.
The accusation of using the U.S. justice system as a weapon against political opponents is strongly reminiscent of arguments made by President-elect Trump. Trump has repeatedly called the criminal prosecutions against him, which have now evaporated without a trace, at least during his presidency, and called on the justice system to “immediately end the political instrumentalization” of the justice system.
What cases are pending against Hunter Biden?
Hunter Biden avoided a trial in Los Angeles at the last minute in September when he unexpectedly admitted multiple tax crimes at his trial. He was accused of failing to pay his federal taxes correctly for years. The allegation is that he spent millions of dollars living a lavish lifestyle instead of paying his taxes. Hunter Biden is only paying taxes retroactively.

Specifically, it covers the period from 2016 to mid-October 2020. The indictment lays out exactly how much Hunter Biden earned over the years — including through shady foreign dealings and opaque payments from “personal friends.” On top of that, a meticulous list of exquisite fees – such as those for sex clubs, stripteases and “adult entertainment” – caused a stir.
He faces up to 17 years in prison in the case, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. However, it was reported at the time that actual penalties for federal crimes were generally lower than the maximum penalty. Sentencing is scheduled for December 16.
In a separate criminal case, Hunter Biden was convicted in June of unlawful possession of a firearm. In that case, he was accused of providing false information when purchasing a weapon in October 2018 and concealing his drug addiction at the time. He denies the accusations. Twelve jurors still found him guilty. The verdict in the weapons case was originally scheduled to be announced on November 13, but was later postponed to December 4.
The Delaware trial brought many sensitive, private matters into public view. Among other things, Hunter Biden's adult daughter Naomi must provide information about her father's drug addiction, as does his brother's widow, with whom he had an extramarital affair after his death.
The president's son faces up to 25 years in prison in the case. However, he is considered unlikely to receive such a lengthy sentence as he has no criminal record. According to experts, he could have escaped without going to jail.
Why is Hunter important in American politics?
Hunter Biden has made negative headlines for years: alcoholism, drug abuse, questionable business dealings, a legal battle with a former stripper over the custody of his illegitimate son. His legal troubles were the culmination of a long series of escapades.
Republicans have long exploited their son's stumble to mount political attacks on the president of the United States. Joe Biden has said publicly many times that he loves his son and is proud of him. He also made it clear he would not pardon him or commute his sentence — but he has now backed away from that.
