Body dysmorphia, or body dysmorphic disorder, is a mental illness where sufferers focus obsessively on a perceived defect in appearance.

The deficit may be small or imaginary, but a person with BDD may spend hours a day trying to fix it.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, people with BDD 'often seek unnecessary surgical interventions'.
