I just tried the knitwear trend that fashionistas in Copenhagen and London are supporting this winter

Mornings dropped into the single digits and the freezing winds that hint at winter's imminent arrival have put knitwear back in prime position. Chunky sweaters, lightweight cardigans and cozy turtlenecks are being called upon to bring warmth to our ensembles. With all our attention on knitwear, there's a new trending style that's bringing a fashionable twist to our coziest wardrobes. And it's one I recently experienced on myself.

From Copenhagen to London, fashionistas are turning to scarf details to add a twist to their simple knits. As a category, knitwear isn't always updated in the same way as other pieces, especially in a style as timeless or premium-looking as this. The scarf knit is exactly what it sounds like, an integration of a scarf into our beloved knits, arriving just in time for the colder months.

The hybrid scarf is nothing new in fashion circles, as scarf jackets and coats have become fashion's answer to staying warm yet chic in recent years. But this is the first time that the combination of knitwear has gained so much prominence. The best part is that this doesn't feel like a moving trend that will skyrocket this season and be forgotten the next time fall rolls around. There's a classic, timeless appeal to the combination, which means any piece you add, whether it's an investment style or a high street purchase, will earn its keep over the years.

Earlier this month, I went out to explore Zara's new collection and the first thing that caught my eye was a knitted cardigan with a green scarf. While a sweater and pants always look paired together, the addition of this detail brings a sophisticated touch to the entire look, as well as making the cardigan even more premium. It's a detail you'd assume was reserved for high-design styles, making high-street finds look even more sophisticated. The version I tried featured scarf details over the shoulders, but during my research I discovered that there are a few variations to choose from. Some extend from the collar to create the illusion of a scarf, while others feature two long strands that can be draped behind you. Even our knit dresses have been given a scarf update, and I've added a few styles below.
