What is Zombie Royale?

Zombie Royale splits the lobby into squads of 3, and the goal is to be the last squad remaining with at least one human player. When a player is killed, they become a Zombie, but this change can be reversed by collecting 4 Antivirals. The game ends when a single squad has human players remaining.

Although you can return to your human form after becoming a Zombie, it’s an uphill struggle. Your best bet is to avoid becoming undead altogether and play cautiously with your team. Here are a few things you can try to increase your survival odds:

Secure your Loadout

Like the traditional Battle Royale modes, a loadout drop will appear on the map during the early part of the game. Your loadout is just as important in Zombie Royale as anywhere else, and you should prioritize securing it. You won’t be the only team going for your loadout, so beware of other players and try to score a few cheeky kills.

Pick the perfect weapon

Zombies can close distance very quickly, so your best bet is to bring a close-range weapon. As a Zombie, I’ve been ruined by many automatic shotguns like the KV Broadside. I find Shotguns a little inconsistent, but there’s no denying their lethality.

I’ve had the most success with SMGs like the Fennec and Iso 9mm. We’ve got a spicy build guide for the Iso 9mm SMG, but the most crucial attachment is an extended magazine. Long-range weapons are fine for killing other humans, but a Zombie will tear you to shreds if they reach you.

Use a Riot Shield

I feel dirty using a Riot Shield at the best of times, but they work well against Zombies. Even if you have your primary weapon out, the Shield stays on your back and protects you from any attacks from behind. Holding an area is a decent strategy in Zombie Royale, and the Riot Shield is an excellent choice for that playstyle.

Find creative hiding places

As you’re at the mercy of the storm, I can’t recommend areas that will work in every match. That said, locales with uneven terrain are a real pain for Zombie players and may allow you to kill them before they get close.

Obscure locales like the Tanker are good as they are surrounded by water, good lines of sight, and plenty of places where your Shotgun or SMG can work.

Don’t camp on roofs!

High ground is usually a power position in shooters, but Zombies can jump incredibly high and shut you down. I’ve killed tons of survivors chilling on roofs as a Zombie. It’s not a bad place to be at the start of the match, but you’ll want to move inside as Zombies overrun the map.

Lock down a location

Roofs may be a no-go zone, but if you can hold a small room with your team, you’ll have a great time. Shotguns and SMGs excel in these environments and feel free to place explosives around the area for added protection.

What should I do as a Zombie?

It’s not game over just because you’re a Zombie, and if you still have Humans on your team, you are a powerful ally to them. Your goal as the undead is to protect your friends and to collect 4 Antiviral Syringes to reverse your Zombie status. Being a Zombie is rough, even with superpowers, but I have a few tips.

Use your abilities

I see many Zombie players using their incredible jumps to traverse the map, but don’t forget to use Zombie Rage and your Grenades. Grenades disorient Humans and make them easy pickings. Your undead abilities are on short cooldowns, so make the most of them.

Don’t fear the Gas

Gas is a massive problem for Humans in Zombie Royale, but it doesn’t affect you at all. Avoid running into gunfire at all costs, and use your mobility and Gas immunity to overwhelm your opponents.

Those are my tips for winning Zombie Royale. If you’re playing with randoms, try to stay with them and mark areas to let them know your intentions. A solo player is easy pickings for Zombies, but you’re much safer if your squad is with you.
