Hunting ghosts is fun, whether with friends or flying solo in Phasmophobia. While the latest updates have included some intricate overhauls, classic mechanics remain. Here’s how to use salt on ghosts in Phasmophobia!
How to use salt for objectives in Phasmophobia
Grab a container of salt from the truck, then while it is equipped, press the action button (right-click) on the floor where you’d like to use it in Phasmophobia. This pours a small mound on the spot which you can then leave and check later for a footprint. Only ghosts can leave footprints in salt.

I sometimes get the secondary objective to get a footprint in salt in the game, and it’s one of the most low-maintenance tasks you can do.
Is salt useful in Phasmophobia?
I’d argue that salt is underrated outside of its purpose of completing secondary objectives. You can snap pictures of the footprints in the salt for extra money after completing a hunt. It’s also a permanent reminder that the marked spot was along the ghost’s path.
But if you and your team place several mounds of this salt in an area to track movement patterns or a ghost’s overall path, you can more easily track down any rooms it likes to hide in. This is a fantastic passive alternative to just using the basic equipment or breaking out the expensive parabolic mics and motion sensors.
I also enjoy the benefits of finding footprints in the salt and whipping out the UV light to spot footprints or other marks elsewhere. Having a few extra containers of this, along with smudge sticks, is surprisingly helpful for beginners. Bring your ghost-hunting gear and set up shop along footprints in the salt, because salt marks the spot!
