In Fallout 76, players can have up to five different characters per account. While this may not be that interesting to new players, as they progress through the game, they will soon see how vital these extra character slots can be. For all its merits, weight management is something that players will constantly have to think about.
Since players can store a maximum of 1200 lbs in their stash box, those without a Fallout 1st membership will really struggle as they will need to store all of their junk and ammo in their stash box. While 1200 lbs sounds like a lot, it really isn’t. Because of this, players like to swap items between characters to distribute some of the weight.

Fallout 76: 9 Best Ways To Maximize Carry Weight
Players have several options when it comes to maximizing carry weight in Fallout 76. These examples are some of the best.
The Public Team Method
By Far The Riskiest Method
The public team method isn’t one that players should do unless it is a matter of urgency. Unfortunately, this method can go wrong, so it’s best to use one of the other methods on this list. However, should a player need to transfer something quickly and doesn’t have a friend online or a Fallout 1st subscription, then this may be the only option they have.
To do this, join a public server. Once in, join a public team. Try to join a casual team or an event team. Joining a daily ops or expedition team could get you kicked, since you won’t actually be joining your teammates. Once on a team, take any items you want to transfer to another character and store them in a public storage space. This can be a mailbox, cash register, or any other container out in the world. Just check that the weight of the container says 0/0.
A popular container is the one by the Whitespring Train station, but it’s probably best to avoid that one due to its popularity. Instead, try the cash register at the Rusty Pick or any storage unit at any other train station. Place all the items that you want to swap in the storage unit and close the application. Once closed, immediately reload the game. When the main menu comes up, switch characters and then hit Play With Team.
This will take you back to the same server that you stashed your items on. Head to the storage container and take out all the items. There are a few reasons why this method is high risk. Firstly, any other player could come across your secret stash and take it. If the team leader decides to kick you, then you won’t be able to get back on the same server. So, try to avoid using this method unless absolutely necessary.
The Fallout 1st Method
A Paid Way To Transfer Items
If you have a Fallout 1st membership, then transferring items like weapons and armor pieces from one character to another is much easier and safer. However, it’s not 100% safe, so use it with caution. The method itself is mostly the same as the previous method. Only this time, you load into a private server.
Before loading into a private server, turn off the ability for friends to join. Select the option, team only. That way, it prevents others from joining. Load into a private server and head to any open-world storage container. The blue suitcase outside the Whitespring Train Station is a good one for this, as there tend to be very few enemies around.
Put all the items you want to transfer into the box and exit to the main menu. This is the part that you want to be very careful of. After switching characters, make sure that you rejoin the private world pretty quickly. If you accidentally join a public server, then you will lose all the items you stashed on the private server. Also, if you take too long (more than a few minutes) to rejoin your private server, then the server will close, and your items will be lost forever.
Fallout 76
has a tendency to crash every now and then. Should this happen while you are in the middle of transferring items, then you will lose those items.

Although it’s not required to play, players should consider how a subscription to Fallout 1st can affect their experience with Fallout 76.
The Friend Method
A Reliable Method
If you have friends who also play Fallout 76, then you can use them to transfer items. It goes without saying, make sure that you trust your friend as they could potentially keep your valuable belongings.
To do this method, simply give your friend all of the items you want to transfer. You can do this either via the trade menu or by dropping the items and having your friend pick them up. Once your friend has your items, hop over to another character and load back onto your friend’s server. Then simply have your friend give you all of your items back.
This is a more reliable method as there is little chance of you losing your items. If the game crashes, but your friend has your items, then nothing will be lost.
The Courier Method
A Very Safe Method
When it comes to transferring items from one character to another, the courier method is a great option. This involves using Reddit or Discord. There are dedicated forums for Fallout 76 trades. Places like Market76 are where players and traders hang out. On these forums, there are players who are known as couriers. You can request a courier to help transfer items from one character to another. Similar to the friends’ entry above, give the items that you want to transfer to the courier, switch characters, and have the courier return your items.
Just make sure that the courier is an official one. Market76 and most of the other Fallout 76 trading forums have a list of couriers pinned to the top of the page. Make sure that the courier that responds to your message is on that list. If you are feeling generous, feel free to give the courier a tip for helping you out; they appreciate it. The only downside of this method is that it can sometimes take a while to find a courier who is free to help you.
