How to Solve the Boiler Puzzle

As you explore Derceto Manor in Alone in the Dark, you will come across all sorts of puzzles. Some are solved right away like the puzzle box, while others take time to complete. The more complex puzzles will require you to solve smaller puzzles while also finding items scattered across the manor.

These puzzles are what allow you to progress the story and unravel more of the mystery behind Jeremy and the Dark Man. The boiler is one of these puzzles, and while you can encounter it at the beginning of the game, you will not be able to solve it until the second chapter.

How to Get Rid of the Steam

The boiler has a plate similar to the one found on the clock. So to actually start this puzzle, you must find both pieces that are missing. Of course, there is one extra step that needs to be completed before you can find them. When you first encounter the boiler, you will see a lot of steam shooting out of it. You can’t cross over it nor duck under it, so you must find a way to get the boiler to stop spewing out steam.

First, you must enter the Drawing Room by using the palette knife to get past the wedged door. Inside this room, you will find the Cellar Key. This key will allow you to open the door to the Food & Wine Cellar. When you enter this room, you will soon discover an electrified cable resting in some water.

Look at the wine racks to the right and grab the switch. Follow the cable to a circuit breaker in the corner of this room. Insert the switch to use the circuit breaker to cut power to the cable. This also cuts the power for the entire basement. Continue to the other side of the room and take the Valve Handle. Go back to the boiler and attach the Valve Handle to it. This will cause the steam to disappear.

Where to Find the Broken Plates

Once the steam is gone, you can go to the other side of the Boiler Room. The first Broken Plate will be on the ground there. Next, you will need to grab the key that is on top of the broken piano in the Grand Parlor. This key will open the locked medicine box located in Lottie’s Room, which contains Dr. Jenkin’s Lozenges. Once you have this item, go to Cassandra’s Room. There will be two more bottles of medicine.

In this same room, you will see a bottle rack that the medicines can be placed on. Put them in the order depicted in the image above. This reveals three numbers: two, five, and seven. Also, in this room, there will be a lock similar to the one in Perosi’s Room. Using the cypher from that puzzle, you will need to enter the following combination to open the lock: Pisces, Gemini, Leo. By entering this combination, you will obtain the second Broken Plate.

How to Solve the Boiler Puzzle

Take the two pieces down to the boiler and insert them. You will then need to rearrange the pieces to look like the image depicted above. Once you’ve done that, the boiler will deactivate and the gauges will give you the following numbers: nine, seven, and five. Place your talisman onto the plate and enter these numbers. This will open a path to a cemetery, which is where your next objective is.
