Thankfully, there’s a way for players to permanently increase their maximum health, though, like everything else in the game, the method for doing so is incredibly cryptic. Still, for those hoping to get more hearts in Animal Well, this should come in pretty handy.

How to Get More Hearts in Animal Well

In the bottom right portion of the map, there’s a save room with a burrowing animal to the left of the phone, not far from the Travel Egg. Whenever players try to approach it, the animal hastily retreats back into its burrow, leading many to wonder why it’s even here. Well, as it turns out, the animal in question is actually a groundhog, which should give players a pretty good idea of what they need to do in order to interact with it; or, at least, when they need to do it.

For those unaware, Groundhog Day is on the second of February, and changing the date of one’s console or computer to this occasion will lead to a very different outcome. If players enter the save room with the groundhog on February 2, they’ll find it standing up outside of its burrow with a mysterious potion in hand. Approaching the creature will result in them being prompted to sip the potion, and doing so will grant them an additional heart container.

Players may be wondering how many times they can do this, and the answer to that question is four. By sipping the groundhog’s potion four times, Animal Well players can increase their maximum health from four hearts to eight. However, they’ll only be able to do this once per year, so will need to change the date to February 2 on four different years to get all four extra hearts. They can do this without ever having to close the game, though they will need to save and back out to the main menu each time they change the date in order to get the potion to respawn.

Having eight hearts can make surviving Animal Well considerably easier, though it’s also key to solving one of the game’s most complicated puzzles. Usually, if players get eaten by the Chameleon boss, it will result in an instant death. However, if they have eight hearts, the Chameleon will instead spit them back out before providing them with a special message written in Wingdings.
