Today Gearboix published an extensive behind-the-scenes documentary about the upcoming sci-fi RTS Homeworld 3 by Blackbird Interactive.

Not only do we get to hear from the developers about the ins and outs of the creation of the game, but the video also shows plenty of new gameplay.

We learn that the developers had to wait 20 years before they could realize their vision of the game, which is a love letter to the fans of the franchise.

We hear about the classic and modern controls, and the fact that the game has been built so that it can cater to both veteran players and new audiences. There are plenty of control customization options as well as accessibility options to let players play however they want.

A big new element in the game is terrain, which creates choke points and interesting decision-making situations. It blocks the line of fire and sensors. You can also use it to move your ships as you can click on terrain and the units will pathfind on it.

Another big element is the types of ships that counter each other, which creates decision making challenges on what to build.

The developers also describe what they managed to achieve thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 5, including ship damage and what you can get in terms of visuals if you have a powerful PC.

Another interesting element we heard about is the emergent narrative conveyed by the chatter between the ships. Ship commanders are also named, so you may try to keep them alive as long as possible.

You can check out the video for yourself below.

Homeworld 3 will be released for PC on March 8, 2024, just outside of the previously announced release window in February. It was announced all the way back in 2019 and kickstarted with a crowdfunding campaign on Fig.
