“I think it's a silly name,” he laughed. 'If it had been five more minutes, I would have come up with a better name.

Propelled into the stratosphere with the band's chart-topping single Iris (a song that spent 11 months on the Billboard Hot 100), John also revealed that fame was something he never seriously pursued.

“Being famous was hard enough,” he said.

'That was never my goal, that's right. Because we've been a band for so long and traveled around America in a van for years, I actually found it a little awkward.

John formed Goo Goo Dolls in Buffalo, New York in 1985 with bassist Robbie Tagak and drummer George Dutuska.

The band performed Start Life as covers before developing a more punk sound under the single name The Sex Maggots.

They became popular in the 1990s due to their bright power pop sound, with artists such as Iris, Name and Black Balloon.

Drummer Mike Malin joined the band in 1995, but left in 2013 under difficult circumstances.
