Greek footballer George Baldock found dead at home in Athens; Investigators concluded that it was a crime

George Baldock, who played for the Greek national football team, was found dead in his home near Athens. He was 31 years old.

According to police, Baldock's body was found on Wednesday in a swimming pool in Glyfada, a suburb in the southern region of Athens. Other details about Baldock's death were not immediately available.

Authorities have denied any wrongdoing, and police spokeswoman Constantina DiMoglidu told The Associated Press that the coroner who examined the body “told us there was no evidence of criminal activity.”

Dimoglidou also said Baldock's home was searched.

“The house was also searched by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. “It does not appear to be a criminal act but an investigation is ongoing into any incident,” he added.

Born in Greece and Great Britain, Baldock played 12 games for the Greek national team. He last played in March in the Euro 2024 play-off match against Georgia.

The Hellenic Football Federation, through the European Football Association (UEFA), expressed its condolences to Baldock's loved ones.

“There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the untimely death of our young man,” the statement said. “This moment calls for silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from the other family. Farewell”.

In addition to international competition, Baldock played for Sheffield United in 2017. He helped the club gain promotion to the Premier League twice, in 2019 and 2023. Earlier this year he left Sheffield United to join Panathinaikos FC. Greek Super League.

Following news of Baldock's death, Sheffield United issued a statement on social media.

“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of former player George Baldock,” the club said in a statement. “The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was hugely popular with fans, staff and teammates who wore the red and white shirt alongside him.”

Panathinaikos said the organization was “shocked” by the news of Baldock's death.

“We are shocked and devastated by the loss of our George. The Panathinaikos family is saddened by his sudden death. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”

The English Football Association has confirmed there will be a moment of silence ahead of Thursday's Nations League match between England and Greece at Wembley, with players from both teams wearing black armbands. UEFA said a similar tribute would be paid when Greece hosts Ireland on Sunday.
