New army rules are coming to Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. The fantasy counterpart to Warhammer 40k has received its share of support, such as the upcoming Cities of Sigmar army. But now, the two series will share a bit more in common with the introduction of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown.

The Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown announcement

According to an official Warhammer-Community post, Games Workshop went into further detail about Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown.

I wonder how these guys will get a chance.

In the post, Games Workshop mentions that Armies of Renown will be introduced as part of the upcoming Dawnbringers books. Four will be introduced in Dawnbringers: Book II – Reign of the Brute, with four more coming in Dawnbringers: Book III – The Long Hunt.

In a Q&A, Games Workshop explained that Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown are self-contained substantial rules supplements. They’re heavy on theme, taking inspiration from how a faction battles in the narrative, or representing the army of a notable hero in the lore.

Furthermore, these rules were designed to explore new patterns of play without putting additional rules on top of an army’s battletome. They replace existing allegiance abilities and are designed to be more accessible. In addition, the rules will be available on the Age of Sigmar app.

While every Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown is geared towards narrative play, they have been designed with matched play in mind as well.

For example, you might already have a Mercenary Mega-Gargant, and now King Brodd’s Stomp in Reign of the Brute provides you with a curated set of options. All without a battletome being required.

These Armies of Renown rules are not meant to replace the core way a faction plays, just provide different avenues of play.

On the whole, the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Armies of Renown are similar to Warhammer 40k Armies of Renown. These alternate rules were introduced to the grimdark sci-fi miniatures game in 2021, providing new rules for the Imperial Knights, Death Guard, and Adeptus Mechanicus armies.

Dawnbringers: Book III – The Long Hunt will be available for pre-order tomorrow.
