While Fortnite’s latest season doesn’t look like it’ll be particularly memorable, fans of the battle royale shooter are instead getting nostalgic for a season that recently celebrated an impressive anniversary.
Chapter 2 Season 2 originally kicked off on February 20, 2020 – making it four years since the ‘Top Secret’ themed drop first arrived, as pointed out by CuberBeats on the Fortnite subreddit, and didn’t mince words with their praise, calling it “probably the best battle pass ever made”.
As implied from the name, the season took on something of a Spies theme – and introduced The Agency into the game’s lore. It was also the first appearance of fan favourite character Meowscles and also saw the debut of Marvel character Deadpool into the game.
“This season is definitely Fortnite’s second prime,” CuberBeats continued. “And it’s crazy to see how the game has evolved since then.” – A sentiment that many others agreed with, “one of the best seasons, it felt like peak Fortnite” said FLcitizen. “The best season in the world” adds TheBigCherry.
Of course, there were a number of players lamenting the passing of time since the season, such as Spicyboio who said “I can’t believe it’s been 4 years already. I remember waking up and watching the trailer for this season being so excited and hyped.”
The season also introduced things we almost take for granted in Fortnite today, such as customisable skins like Maya and weapons like decoy grenades, proximity mines and much more besides.
Behind the scenes, the season was originally meant to launch a few months earlier than it did, but was delayed for a number of reasons – including an upgrade to the (at the time) new Chaos physics system for the Unreal engine.
AI-Sticks put forward their argument as to why they loved this season so much – “The game was still in its “fun cartoonish” era, but worked great with the POI’s and the secret bases everywhere, and it introduced so many items that weren’t merely just guns, but unique items that fit the theme and made the game a little less sweaty and a little more unique.”
“I think that’s why I miss that season. Course, I’m prob blinded by nostalgia just as much as anyone else, but I definitely prefer the more silly side of Fortnite rather than the serious, sweaty shooter that’s it’s beginning to me in this chapter.”
Will we ever see a season as unique as that again? Fans surely live in hope that could be the case. For now, they’ll be waiting with baited breath for the Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2 start date. For more on the game, check out our Fortnite: Best guns in Chapter 5 and our weapons tier list.
