Square Enix finally shared the release date of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, further cementing it as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, to no one’s surprise.
When most see that news, they assume it’ll be at least half a year until we see ports for other platforms, but the contract indicates the game will go multi-platform sooner.
During the latest PlayStation State of Play stream, the footnotes of the new Final Fantasy VII Rebirth trailer confirm the game will not be available on other platforms until “at least May 29, 2024”. This indicates there is only a three month window of timed exclusivity.
This is much lower than the first remake’s exclusivity for the PS4 and even less than Final Fantasy XVI’s six month window. While the latter has a smaller exclusivity window, Square Enix has stated it’ll take them longer to port the game over to PC, for example.
Perhaps it’s for that reason why the promised exclusivity is much shorter this time around. Even the first remake took time past the promised year to even be released on another platform outside of PlayStation. It’s possible Sony decided to spend less knowing that the actual release would extend past the deal.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now set to release February 29, 2024 for the PlayStation 5.
