A recent developer Q&A series regarding Exodus answered a lot of questions about the game. We now know that the game is set in the Omega Centauri cluster and promises an open world where player choices have far-reaching consequences. There are six videos, but they’re short, revealing little bits and pieces, and I’ll basically tell you everything you can learn from it.
According to the Q&A video series, players will take on the role of a fully voiced protagonist navigating a complex universe where humans are the underdogs facing off against technologically superior beings known as the Celestials. The game takes inspiration from classics like Interstellar and Dune while also drawing on the team’s experience with RPGs like Baldur’s Gate and RPGs from the Star Wars franchise.
One of the key features emphasized during the Q&A is the impact of player choices. The game features multiple endings shaped by decisions made throughout the journey. Time dilation plays a central role, with choices impacting not only the immediate future but also years and even centuries ahead.
Players will not be alone on their adventures. Exodus features a diverse cast of companions who will offer support and insight along the way. Matthew McConaughey even lends his voice to a mentor figure who provides guidance and reflects on the weight of the player’s decisions. While there is a story, the Omega Centauri cluster is yours to discover at your own pace, with no set path dictating your journey.
The developers stressed their adherence to scientific accuracy while working with sci-fi authors and concept artists to create a believable universe. The Q&A also touched on the game’s inspirations, drawing parallels to titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Tomb Raider, and The Last of Us in terms of narrative quality and player engagement.
Every video in the Q&A started by asking players to join their community, and I believe I’ve saved you from how repetitive that got because they used the same clip every time.
Overall, that’s the game’s basic plot, but it’s more than we’ve had since this was revealed during The Game Awards. Hopefully, we can learn more soon.
