Metaphor: ReFantasiavery similar to Person The series features many characters that will join the player's team, helping him in difficult combat situations and accompanying him as he explores the United Kingdom of Euchrony. Although the list of playable characters is not as large as e.g Persona 5 Royalthere are still plenty of people players can control Metaphor. Each character also has their own Archetype, a powerful being they transform into that imbues them with unique abilities.
Of course there are tons of other amazing characters in there Metaphor: ReFantasiabut the supporting cast are not playable and instead act as followers. These are basically social links with Person series, ways in which players can improve their Archetypes by building bonds with the appropriate Followers. However, There are seven playable characters in total, including the Protagonist, and while they are all amazing, some stand out more than others.
7 Grius (Arvid Alces)
Temporary hero
Grius – real name Arvid Alces – joins the main team at the beginning of Metaphor: ReFantazio, assisting in their quest to assassinate Louis Guiaberna. He is a tough swordsman who once served the prince as his sword teacher, and now seeks to protect him and aid the resistance. While he's certainly a memorable character, his brief appearance puts him lower on the listsimply because he doesn't get enough time to shine.
Grius mentors the Protagonist before he is cruelly kidnapped and murdered by Louis at the beginning Metaphor: ReFantasia. Unfortunately, he is revived and forced to fight a challenging battle against the player and his team. However, his kind and brave attitude is revealed in his final moments when he asks the player to continue their journey and protect his daughter, Maria. Despite his untimely death, his time with the gang is entertaining and a reminder Why Metaphor: ReFantasia he's so gorgeous. If Arvid had stayed longer, he probably would have been much higher on the list.
6 Will (hero)
Empty Slate Figure
The main character in Metaphor: ReFantasia isn't particularly compelling, despite having more voiced lines than Atlus' previous heroes. While it's not a completely consistent note, mostly due to his interesting backstory with the prince, his painful honesty can make him a little boring at timessupported only by Gallica and her charm. Compared to the rest of the cast, the main character isn't even half as interesting, which naturally puts him quite low on the list.

Every Archetype in Metaphor: ReFantanzio's Explanation
Metaphor: ReFantazio uses Archetypes instead of Personas to give the player unique abilities, but there are many differences between the two.
Of course, Gallica does most of the heavy lifting because her outspoken personality blends well with the rest of the cast. She is an Atlus signature character, and her mix of sassy humor and wit makes every interaction with her extremely enjoyable. Additionally, her relationship with the heroine is sweet and funny, which largely compensates for its flaws and makes her the more memorable part of the duo. While certainly not Atlus' worst main character, Metaphor: Refantazio The heroine definitely could have done better.
5 June
Once Louis's close companion
Junah is a really interesting character Metaphor: ReFantasiahaving once been a close confidant of Louis, the main antagonist. However, after she is ultimately betrayed by him, she joins the main party, making her, like most of the party's members, w Metaphorthe bad man became good. Her role as a singer also gives her a unique personality trait this is evident throughout the game, helping to further diversify the cast.

There are some amazing worlds waiting to be explored for open world enthusiasts looking to dip their toes into the deep well of JRPGs.
Junah is definitely unique and is ahead of the main character when it comes to best playable characters. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, as it adds a lot to the game and the party, which it proves once again Metaphor: ReFantasia is one of the best JRPG games of 2024. Despite being slightly defeated by the other playable characters due to their unique traits, Junah is great fun to be around and more than makes up for the personality vacuum left by the Protagonist.
4 Euf
The Three-Eyed Miracle
Eupha is an incredibly unique character that helps expand the world significantly Metaphor: ReFantasia and its diverse tribes that the player will encounter. She is a priestess of the Mustari tribe and has three eyes with which she sees Magla, which distinguishes her both narratively and visually. She also has one of the more unique archetypes – the Summoner – which makes her a fun character to use in battles.
Once again, like Junah, Eupha is not inherently evil, and like the best of things Person party members are truly an amazing addition to the team. Her unique traits and characteristics make her a more memorable character, as does her position in history. Unlocking her and her archetype is an important part Metaphor: ReFantasiaand will likely be a fan-favorite character and considered one of Atlus' best.
3 Heizmay
Brave Knight
Heismay's bold attitude and fancy way of speaking clash drastically with his adorable, bat-like appearance, which is a large part of what makes him such an endearing character from the moment players meet him. He belongs to the eugief tribe, which is visually very different from the rest of the United Kingdom of Euchron, and also suffers from high sensitivity to sounds. However, while he experiences a lot of discrimination Metaphor: ReFantasiaHeismay manages to rise above it allultimately proving himself to be a fascinating character.
He also has a classic hero story, as he was once a brave knight of the Eugief tribe before his son died and he then went into exile. However, after joining the party, he decides to atone for his failures – although the party obviously doesn't see it that way – and eventually bonds with them, creating a new family. Heismay is great, not only from a design standpoint, but also from that archetypal brave knight with a heart of goldand having him around is a constant joy at all times Metaphor: ReFantasia.
2 Hulkenberg
A stoic hero
Despite being a fairly trope JRPG character, Hulkenberg is easily one of the best playable characters in all of gaming. Metaphor: ReFantasiaadding some much-needed stoicism to a game full of quirky characters. Her history of wanting to atone for her failure to protect the prince, her formal and sometimes goofy attitude, and her penchant for fighting make her and Heismay closely related, and yet she manages to stand out as a unique character. Although it has a lot in common with some of them Persona 5 best characters. offers a new dimension to the party Metaphor which is appreciated.
Of course, Hulkenberg is a fan favorite because of how badass she can be, and her blade skills prove incredibly impressive throughout the film. Metaphor: ReFantasia. It is especially nice to watch her bond with the Heroine and Strohl, and her seriousness and diligence clash with the more unconscious attitude of the main character. While she's not at the top of the list of best playable characters, it's easy to see why so many players consider her the best.
1 Strohl
Best friend
Strohl is by far the best playable character in the game Metaphor: ReFantasia for one simple reason: it perfectly complements the best friend archetype which Atlus games they absolutely love. From Ryuji in Person 5 to Yosuke Person 4every Atlus game seems to have this type of character, and Strohl does a great job of filling this role while also managing to elevate it. Traditionally, this best friend archetype is goofy and clumsy, but Strohl is intelligent, driven by his passion for justice, and a nobility without even letting it show.
What makes Strohl so fascinating is his relationship with Heroas she forms a bond with him almost immediately, helping him in his quest from the moment they meet. There is much more to him than meets the eye, and his sarcastic and brash attitude often gets in the way of his goals and turns others away from him. Srtohl is a great character Metaphor: ReFantasia and incredibly memorable, especially for those who are particularly drawn to the best friend archetype.

21 years later, my favorite JRPG still hasn't gotten the remaster it deserves
A JRPG that does everything right deserves a remaster that keeps its excellence intact, but the odds aren't looking great for that.
Of course, Metaphor: ReFantasia is blessed to have such a wide range of great and deep characters, which is quite typical of Atlus games. This is what primarily makes it such an attractive game and easy to recommend to those looking for a fascinating RPG in 2024. While Strohl may be the best playable character, Metaphor: ReFantazio the entire event is incredibly memorable and will probably go into the JRPG Hall of Fame.
