Sony launched the new era of PlayStation Plus in June 2022, combining the previous version with PS Now. Although the latter subscription service was around for a long time, PS Now struggled to get over its early negative reputation, so a revamp was needed to wipe the slate clean.
PS Plus is split into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential unlocks PlayStation’s online features along with providing a couple of free monthly games. Along with Essential’s offerings, Extra grants access to hundreds of PS5 and PS4 games; meanwhile, Premium extends the lineup to include older consoles. Each month, Sony adds a bunch of new PS Plus games to each tier, including first-party exclusives, third-party juggernauts, and indie darlings. Some months are better than others, but they all tend to include a couple of standouts. What are all the monthly games that have been added to PS Plus?

PS Plus Premium has a library of over 700 titles, but which are the best games on Sony’s subscription service?

PS Plus Essential’s December 2023 games cover quite a spectrum of genres, bringing the year to a close with an eclectic selection that walks the line between mainstream and niche. While not perhaps the biggest names to ever grace Sony’s subscription service, all three games are fairly notable in their own right, and they might be able to scratch itches that other titles struggle to reach.
PS Plus Free Games for December 2023 Revealed
Sony officially announces the free PlayStation Plus games that subscribers can claim in the month of December 2023.
December’s standout title is probably Lego 2K Drive, a racing game that debuted in May 2023. Set in an open-world and featuring a robust vehicle customization tool, 2K’s racer controls well and features quite a bit of content courtesy of its serviceable main plot or optional quests. The title garnered criticism for its aggressive shop, and while certainly fair, players can still have a lot of fun without ever visiting that part of the package.
Powerwash Simulator charges players with running a cleaning business, a journey that starts humble but can pave the way to great success. Relaxing and accessible, this sim can hit the spot if someone wishes to unwind after a long day. It is, unsurprisingly, slow-paced, but the core gameplay is decent and the business sim aspect is handled well.
December 2023’s last free game is another open-world project called Sable. Focusing on exploration, players guide the protagonist through a rite of passage that involves traversing a wasteland-like sandbox. Although not lacking a traditional story, the game is more interested in facilitating player-driven campaigns.
These PS Plus Essential games will be available on December 5, 2023.
All Monthly Games That Were Free On PS Plus Essential
- 1- Month Price: $9.99
- 3-Month Price: $24.99
- 12-Month Price: $79.99
Formerly known as just PS Plus, Essential is the minimum required to play online multiplayer on the PS5 or PS4. Every month, the tier rotates a couple of new free PS Plus games. While these titles are only available to purchase for roughly a month, anyone who picks them up can continue to play them after that point as long as they have an active subscription.
- 1-Month Price: $14.99
- 3-Month Price: $39.99
- 12-Month Price: $134.99
PS Plus Extra is the first tier that includes a catalog featuring hundreds of games. Extra focuses exclusively on PS5 and PS4 titles, with each month expanding the existing library with roughly 10 to 20 new additions. Unlike Essential, PS Plus Extra’s games are available indefinitely, although some could be removed after spending a few months on the service. Since the service’s launch, this tier’s monthly lineup has gradually started to include more PS5 releases.
PS Plus Extra’s December 19 lineup brings the year to a close on a fairly positive note, and it is a particularly good month for native PS5 additions. Nearly all the games come with proper versions for that console, allowing them to make better use of the hardware than a standard backward-compatible option. That said, the month does not have any PS5-only releases, so an argument could be made that none of the titles take full advantage of the system’s capabilities. Still, the selection is respectable.
GTA 5 needs no introduction, and its PS4 and PS5 versions are now on PS Plus Extra. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was the butt of many jokes during its release cycle, but Team Ninja knows a thing or two about constructing enjoyable combat. Tinykin is one of the best Pikmin-like projects on non-Nintendo consoles, and it is a charming game that is suitable for players of most ages. Metroidvania and Soulslike fans should check out Moonscars, Grime, and Salt and Sacrifice, all of which offer 2D takes on those genres. Gigabash is a love letter to the kaiju genre, while Metal: Hellsinger adds a beat to FPS action. The sole PS4-only game is Mega Man 11, a sequel that does a fantastic job of modernizing Capcom’s franchise in a way that preserves its core appeal.
Best PS5 Games On PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium (December 2023)
Sony’s PS Plus Extra and Premium tiers have hundreds of titles, including some of the best PlayStation 5 games.
All Classic Games That Were Added To PS Plus Premium
- 1-Month Price: $17.99/month
- 3-Month Price: $49.99
- 12-Month Price: $159.99
PS Plus Premium includes everything available on Sony’s service. Along with Essential and Extra’s games and benefits, this tier includes a classic catalog of PS3, PS2, PS1, and PSP games, along with some PS4 remasters. Premium’s monthly additions have been inconsistent so far, and it is not unusual for a month to go by with barely any classic additions to the tier.
Although most lineups contain only a handful of classics, PS Plus Premium has been steadily enhancing its old-school library, particularly when it comes to PSP and PS1 releases. The games might not all be bona fide masterpieces, but the selection covers both well-known and obscure properties.
