Emmentalers lose for Stefan Charlin: When the Titans fumble

Stéphane Charlin (24) is not only statistically the best goalie in the league. But he spoiled Langnau's victory against Servet with his most sustained goal of the season. Emmental lost 4:5 in overtime, mainly because of their goalkeeper. How is this possible?

Stéphane Charlin still leads the league in goalkeeping statistics: 94.42% catch rate in 13 games. The Bills' Harri Säteri ranks second with 94.16 percent in 17 games.

But Stéphane Charlin spoiled Langnau's victory over Servette. The Emmental team led 1:0, 3:1, 4:2 respectively, and still led 4:3 in the final stage. After 58 and 25 minutes, head coach Jan Cadieu replaced goalkeeper Robert Meyer with the sixth player on the field. Terrible moment. drama. But victory seemed a foregone conclusion: Stéphane Charlin could take over the goal unchallenged. There are only 40 seconds left in the game. He has a few “foolproof” options: He can block the puck, push it left or right, or even move it across the ice and into the stands. This will result in a two-minute penalty. But due to limited time, this won't be a problem.

He takes the dangerous option and tries to send the puck straight up the middle and out of the danger zone. He hit Marcus Granlund, and the puck bounced off Servette's Finnish forward and into Langnauer's empty net. 4:4. In overtime, Servetus won 5:4. Stéphane Charlin only had a catch rate of 88.37%, which is really bad by his standards. On top of that, Friday was his 13th game of the season.

The Titans made like a beginner at 4:4. Things can't happen the right way. There has to be an explanation. The strange 4:4 has given rise to at least two theories.

  1. Stefan Chalin has signed with Servetus for next season. It would be logical for him to give his new employer a gift.
  2. He’s not thinking about the team but about personal glory and trying to move the puck into his opponent’s empty net. That’s why we can score goals. Write history. Why else would he break all the usual rules and kick the puck straight forward? If he scores, he will become the first goalkeeper in Langnau's history (since 1946) to score in the top flight. To date, only eventual Stanley Cup champion Martin Gerber has scored in an NLB playoff game against Martini during the 1997/98 promotion season.

None of this is true. Question to Stefan Charlin after the game: Do you want to score? “No, I just want to shoot the target out of the danger zone.” It's that banal, that simple.

The thing about great goalkeepers is that they don't sugarcoat their failures and they don't shirk responsibility. After such a defeat, 99 out of 100 goalkeepers will no longer be able to speak. Stephen Charling doesn't let his misfortunes faze him. A quarter of an hour after the game, he appeared to have just freshened up and explained his situation. He wasn't trying to score, he was just trying to break free. He doesn't even accept the excuse that the game against Servetus was special for him. “This is stupid and it's all my fault.” Viewpoint.

The story of the biggest goaltending failure of the season so far is that simple, true and clear. Stéphane Charlin is also an excellent goaltender on the ice.

PS Stéphane Charlin has signed a contract with the Servette for next season, but has until June 15, 2025 to transfer to the NHL. His agent Gaëtan Voisard has held preliminary non-binding discussions. There were no NHL scouts in the stands Friday night, which was a good thing.

“Caesar transfers” have become rare. The “second tier” of negotiations with players who are unlikely to become superstars is even more intense. But they still have their future and can definitely play an important role in the team. For example, SCB forward Yanick Sablatnig.
